About the Book

State of lies
Book: State of Lies
Author: Siri Mitchell
Genre: Suspense
Release Date: August 13, 2019

Months after her husband, Sean, is killed by a hit-and-run driver, physicist Georgie Brennan discovers he lied to her about where he had been going that day. A cryptic notebook, a missing computer, and strange noises under her house soon have her questioning everything she thought she knew.

With her job hanging by a thread, her son struggling to cope with his father’s death, and her four-star general father up for confirmation as the next Secretary of Defense, Georgie quickly finds herself tangled in a political intrigue that has no clear agenda and dozens of likely villains. Only one thing is clear: someone wants her dead too. The more she digs for the truth, the fewer people she can trust. Not her friends. Not her parents. Maybe not even herself.

My Review:
I have  read a couple of books by Siri Mitchell and really enjoyed them, but this was the first suspense book I have read by her and I loved it!  Georgie is a great main character as my heart immediately went out to her and she shows strength and independence with what all she is having to deal with.  Not only does she have to deal with her husband's death, but the circumstances surrounding it, including that it appears he had lied to her.  Then there are changes and politics going on with her family which adds another element of stress as well, and she is left questioning everything and everyone, including herself.  This book moves right along at a good pace and I found myself catching my breath, hoping for the best and wanting to keep on reading just to find out what would happen next.  I highly recommend this book, I really enjoyed it!

A Sense of Place I’m so excited about the release of State of Lies! Among the many reasons for my excitement is the fact that I set the story in my own home town: Arlington, VA. Here are some things you might not know about Arlington:
  1. Arlington was originally included within the borders of Washington, DC.
  2. Arlington isn’t actually a city – it’s a county. We’re the smallest self-governing county in the nation.
  3. Arlington regularly takes the top spot as the most educated place in the country.
  4. Arlington LOVES books. I count at least a dozen different little libraries in my neighborhood alone.
  5. Our region often has a hurricane warning or two every hurricane season. Can you guess where I’ve seen the longest lines when people start to make last-minute preparations? It’s not the grocery store; it’s not the hardware store. It’s the library! (Why wouldn’t you stock up on books too?)
  6. We host Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima Marine Corps War Memorial, and the Pentagon.
  7. We are home to the very first Five Guys hamburger joint location.
  8. We are also home to the headquarters of over a dozen national agencies as well as organizations like Rosetta Stone and Nestlé.
  9. People who attended our high schools include Sandra Bullock, Warren Beatty, Shirley MacLaine, Katie Couric, and Patch Adams.
  10. The thing I love most about Arlington? Its people. Countless government contractors members of the federal workforce live here. I number them among my friends and neighbors. I’ve never met a group more dedicated, more informed, or more determined to put their expertise to good use. And guess what? My heroine, Georgie Brennan, is one of them!

"Deadly Intentions"

Book Blurb from the publisher:

Cover ArtThere is no such thing as random
Research scientist Caitlyn Lindsey is convinced that someone is taking out her team one by one. First, a friend and research partner was killed in a home invasion. Three months ago, her boss died in a suspicious car accident. Four days ago, another partner supposedly committed suicide. And now Caitlyn herself has miraculously survived a hit-and-run. Afraid for her life with nowhere to turn, she reaches out to one of the victims' husbands, Detective Josh Solomon.

Though initially skeptical about Caitlyn's theory, Josh soon realizes the attack that took his wife's life was anything but random. Now the two of them must discover the truth about who is after Caitlyn's team--and what their end game is--before it's too late.

My Review:
Lisa Harris has become one of my favorite romantic suspense writers as she has a way of immediately pulling me into the story and keeping me guessing all the way to the end.  Her latest novel, "Deadly Intentions," is no exception!  Caitlyn is determined to find the truth and she finds out that that may very well cost her her own life.  Josh realizes that Caitlyn has a point and he soon wants to find out answers just as much as Caitlyn does.
This book is full of twists and turns and is filled with action that kept me turning the pages, as I could not read fast enough to find out what was going to happen next.  I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys romantic suspense!

"A Glitter of Gold"

Cover Art"A Glitter of Gold" is the second book in Liz Johnson's Georgia Coast Romance and it is another excellent read from her! Anne is starting over and this is not easy as she can barely afford her rent, and she is still struggling with the guilt from choices in her past and she constantly has her guard up.  Carter is struggling to keep the maritime museum afloat and he is determined to do things on his own, not because of his family name.  When Anne makes a discovery of evidence that a ship actually existed and went down, she and Carter team up as this may be an answer to both of their problems.

I loved the suspense and history that was all rolled into this story.  The journal that Carter has had is fascinating to read and I love how that story is interwoven throughout the book.  Also, the fact that Carter has not shared this with just anyone and that he is determined to do things on his own say a lot about his character and I immediately liked him.  Anne is dealing with so much guilt and I admire her strength to push past and start fresh.  This is such a great book, I love the mysteriousness of the ship and pirates.

"The Faith of Mike Pence" blog tour

The Faith of Mike Pence FB Banner

About the Book

FaithOfMikePence
Book: The Faith of Mike Pence
Author: Leslie Montgomery
Genre: Biography, religious, political
Release Date: August 6, 2019

Several books have been published about Vice President Mike Pence, but none have touched upon what may be the most fascinating aspect of our nation’s second in command: his deep faith.
The Faith of Mike Pence offers an intimate look at the man who calls himself “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order.”
Author Leslie Montgomery details Pence’s spiritual journey and examines how the vice president’s commitment to Christ has been a key component in his life as a husband, father, and public servant. Montgomery examines Pence’s encounters with politicos and evangelistic leaders such as James Dobson and Charles Lake. She shows the role of Pence’s faith in running for various offices, implementing faith-based initiatives, and responding to 9/11, the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the infamous Anthrax scare in Congress that directly affected him.
The Faith of Mike Pence is a powerful account of one of the most conservative vice presidents in American history, with exclusive interviews and insightful commentary from friends, family, and colleagues. It is a serious and moving reflection about one of America’s most admired and respected politicians.

My Review:
I was really looking forward to reading this book as Vice-President Mike Pence is a name that is heard in the news, but that is not really "knowing" a person.  This book really helped me to "know" our vice-president and his heart, his faith.  I love how the author wove quotes from friends and family into this account as it tells his story, but also stories and tidbits from others.  This book really delves into how his faith beginning back in childhood has molded him into the man who he is today.   I love this as one's childhood plays such a role and has such an impact on one's life and how they make decisions and choose to live their lives.  This is an excellent read for anyone whom wishes to know more about one of our country's leaders.

More from Leslie

In 2006, I wrote and released The Faith of Condoleezza Rice, know-ing it might be years before I published another book. My husband and I were undergoing fertility treatments and vowed that if I got pregnant, I’d take a few years off of working outside the home to raise my children until they were in school full-time. Well, I did get pregnant and we had two children in the span of two-and-a-half years.
In early summer 2017, with two kids getting ready to start school again, I prayed and asked God to send me a new book contract; it was time to get back into the thick of things. Two weeks later, I dreamt that I was to write The Faith of Mike Pence. The truth is, neither he nor his faith were even on my radar. I got out of bed and began doing a little research. I wrote a book proposal for different publishers and began to accumulate a list of people I hoped to interview.
My overall goal with this book is not to set the vice president up as a spiritual hero, but to show the heart of the real man—as a Christian, husband, father, and politician. In doing so, I tried to allow his own words and those of his family, friends, and colleagues tell his story while I served as a conduit to weave it together. My prayer is that it inspires, encourages, and challenges you.    —Leslie Montgomery

Release Date: November, 2017

Meghan Gallagher complies with her father’s demand that she work on her own for a year by choosing to tutor eight children in a wild Kansas railroad town. But she had no idea just how wild it was until she was rescued by a local dance hall the day she arrived, and soon after hit by a stray bullet. In short order, she meets a dark, handsome cowboy and a wholesome, attractive doctor who both vie for her heart. As things heat up around town, Meghan’s love life catches fire as well. Is she scandalous to allow both men to court her at the same time? And—how close a relationship with God does Meghan want? Will she draw near? Meghan’s Choice (pre-published) was named a semi-finalist in the 2014 Operation First Novel by Jerry B. Jenkins and an honorable mention for the Golden leaf Award in 2015. Since publication, Meghan’s Choice was a Selah Award finalist and also in the Will Rogers Medallion Award. Published in connection with Hartline Literary Agency, serving the Christian book community. Visit us at www.hartlineliterary.com.

My Review:
"Meghan's Choice" is a story that is a quick read as it is sweet, yet has some tense scenes throughout that will keep you guessing as to what will be the result.  The characters are all entertaining and I love how they interact and the classic love triangle thrown in as well adding an additional twist.  Meghan is totally unprepared for this new position that she accepts as a result of her father's demand that she work and seeing her navigate these trials is entertaining, and really shows her character for who she is.  I love the historical details that are mixed in as it really helps set the scene and bring the time period to life with the aftermath of the war and heavy presence of the saloons.  I am eager to see what comes next in the series!

More from Donna

Back in 2012, I wrote “Zorro” stories for Fan Fiction. I had an awful lot of fun with them, and people seemed to really like them. So, the thought came, what could I write for ‘real?’ I contemplated, prayed, and after a couple weeks or so, an idea came floating across my brain. “Gunfight at Hyde Park.” Huh? I thought about it, and realized it was an obscure history lesson from my hometown in Kansas. I had Google it to get the details. I thought, well, I’m not gonna write a Christian romance novel just about a series of gunfights that killed and wounded more people than the OK Corral. But I did think that the beginning of the gunfights could be the climax of the story. Now, who should my heroine be? And the hero? I started with that and took Christian Writer’s Guild’s Craftsman and the novel was completed in 2013—but only published in late 2017. I’m proud of Meghan’s Choice. Pre-published it made the semi-finals of the last Operation 1st Novel that CWG held and placed in a couple of smaller contests. Last year, it made the finals of the prestigious Selah Awards for published books through the BRMCWC, and the finals of the Will Rogers Medallion Award. My hope is that you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it.

"Daughters of Northern Shores" blog tour!

Daughter of Northern Shores

About the Book

Daughters of Nother Shores Cover
Book: Daughters of Northern Shores
Author: Joanne Bischof
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: March 12, 2019

Aven Norgaard understands courage. Orphaned within an Irish workhouse, then widowed at just nineteen, she voyaged to America where she was wooed and wed by Thor Norgaard, a Deaf man in rural Appalachia. That the Lord saw her along the winding journey and that Aven now carries Thor’s child are blessings beyond measure. Yet while Thor holds her heart, it is his younger brother and rival who haunts her memories. Haakon—whose selfish choices shattered her trust in him.

Having fled the Norgaard orchard after trying to take Aven as his own, Haakon sails on the North Atlantic ice trade, where his soul is plagued with regrets that distance cannot heal. Not even the beautiful Norwegian woman he’s pursued can ease the torment. When the winds bear him home after four years away, Haakon finds the family on the brink of tragedy. A decades-old feud with the neighboring farm has wrenched them into the fiercest confrontation on Blackbird Mountain since the Civil War. Haakon’s cunning and strength hold the power to seal many fates, including Thor’s—which is already imperiled due to a grave illness brought to him at the first prick of warfare.

Now Haakon faces the hardest choice of his life. One that shapes a battlefield where pride must be broken enough to be restored, and where a prodigal son may finally know the healing peace of surrender and the boundless gift of forgiveness. And when it comes to the woman he left behind in Norway, he just might discover that while his heart belongs to a daughter of the north, she’s been awaiting him on shores more distant than the land he’s fighting for.

My Review:
Joanne Bischof has become one of my favorite authors of historical fiction!  "Daughters of Northern Shores" is the second book in the Blackbird Mountain series, and be sure to read book 1 first as it gives you so much detail to the characters.  Aven is a main character who really tugged at my heart.  She faced her challenges, so many challenges, with grace and grit, I really felt my heart going  out to her and at the same time really admired her too.  What I really like most about this book is the rich historical details and how Joanne writes with such vivid descriptions that the setting and time period comes to life along with the characters and it is so easy to get swept up in the story and the characters' lives, feeling as if you are becoming a part of it.  I highly recommend this book and am eager for book 3 to come out!

More from Joanne

One of the questions I receive most often is “How do you get it all done?” As a single, homeschooling mom, I’ve long-since learned that there would be easier ways to have a day job than being an author, but God has been gracious in providing abundantly in so many areas. Here are four that I am most thankful for as I look back over the last few years, including this season of writing Sons of Blackbird Mountain and Daughters of Northern Shores.   Togetherness Now, most authors would agree that “togetherness” isn’t exactly conducive to quality writing time – especially when kids are involved! And while I do need quiet focus to be able to work through a scene or chapter, what I’ve been thankful for is the chance to share story and research discoveries with my children. It’s created more unity around the stories. Instead of needing to usher the kids away, isolating them from the novels I’m writing, I’m able to invite them into them. For the Blackbird Mountain series, I walked them through the Pinterest boards, showing them the different characters. Then we did a history unit on Vikings since that’s the Norgaard Family’s background. We had a blast and it helped make “the story that Mom was working on”, something that they were more aware of and interested in. For my current work-in-progress, we just recently finished an all new history unit including visits to a few local museums and stories that the kids wrote on their own!   Patience I used to want to write, write, write all the time. And often, that’s what I did! Well, I still would love to write as often as I can, but God has been teaching me something oh-so-important: patience. As part of this, I set aside certain parts of the week for writing office hours. These slots of writing time typically occur on Tuesday evenings, and include a few additional 1 ½ hours slots during the week, once homeschooling is done. In this manner, I am able to carve out some quiet writing time while still making sure the kids are having a great and productive day. But for any writer or working mom, we can agree . . . that’s not a lot of time when added up! In God’s wonderful provision, though, He seems to extend much richness to those little snatches of time. They might not be many, but they are mighty! It’s been a prayer of mine for several years now, that by keeping my writing below these other priorities, that God would help me fill in the cracks of time and energy—and He has been so faithful to supply. I still have my moments when I feel frazzled,  especially when deadlines are near, and that’s why I am thankful for this next lesson that God has been teaching me . . .   Communication The thing about living with a writer, is that you often find them staring at a computer screen. That doesn’t look all that productive, does it? But what we’re doing on the other side of that screen is weaving a story-world of plot, characters, purpose, and heart. Typing words onto the page that we hope will touch lives, digging through old articles for research, or jotting down messy plotting notes that we pray will somehow amount to a story one day. By communicating with my kids (like sharing with them about the story and characters) I’m able to help them see what I’m doing and why. And since kids can be rambunctious and full of life (and questions, and needs for snacking, and ideas, and messes . . . *wink*) and since this writer works well with quiet, I have a little chalkboard that I hang on my doorknob when it’s one of my “office hour” slots. I jot down my start time and end time for that 1 ½ hour block, add a heart or smiley face, and often make note of what our next task will be like preparing a meal or doing an activity together. Then I shut my door and the little sign dangling from the knob outside helps the kids remember what I’m up to. It reminds them that I won’t be tucked away for long, but that I do need to focus for a little while. They’re always allowed to come knocking if a need arises, but for the most part, they’re happy on these afternoons with their own projects. When the hour or so is up, we reconvene and go back about our day, usually slipping into something fun that we do together. By having these slots of time in the week, and by communicating carefully with them in a way they can understand, it helps to bring us all what we need.   Grace There are days when I blow it, and days when I need a lot of grace. Maybe I’ve spilled iced tea on one of the research books (don’t worry, this is a hypothetical example 😉 ) or maybe I didn’t save a scene properly, or just feel stuck and exhausted with a plot thread. These days can certainly tamper with the harmony, which begins with my heart and the need to remember the reason for why I write these stories: for God’s glory. When I begin to lose my calm, or grow frustrated or weary with the challenges afoot, I know it’s time to circle back to what it’s all for. It’s for the readers, it’s for my children, it’s for my joy, and most of all, it’s for God’s glory. By me being harried or stressed, very little of this is being accomplished! God has used the writing process to speak to my heart in ways that have reminded me of what I can surrender, and more and more of the ways that I can look to HIM for guidance. The lessons aren’t always easy, but through each season, and through each book, I have come to see more and more all the ways to be thankful.

"Vow of Justice"

Cover Art

I have loved Lynette Eason's Blue Justice series and the time spent with and getting to know the St. John family.  Linc St. John is the main character in this book, but the rest of his family still play important roles.  Linc has fallen for Allison and she feels the same; however they still have their jobs to do and Allison has another thing forefront on her mind - to take down the one responsible for killing her family.  Allison finds herself as a target and is convinced by her supervisor that she needs to stay low, meaning no one can know that she's alive.  However, this is difficult as she is trying to protect a girl that she has formed a bond with.  This is also difficult when her heart has fallen for Linc.  As Linc and Allison struggle to stay a step ahead of those after them and to protect Daria, they discover so many twists and unsettling things.
This book is so fast-paced right from the start as I found myself getting completely caught up in the story and not wanting to stop reading until I found out what would happen next.  I have really loved this series and am sad to see it end, but it has a satisfying end and I am so excited to read what Lynette has written next after reading the included sneak peak!

"Light from Distant Stars"

Cover Art
Book Description from the publisher:

When Cohen Marah steps over his father's body in the basement embalming room of the family's funeral home, he has no idea that he is stepping into a labyrinth of memory.

Over the next week, Cohen's childhood comes back in living color. The dramatic events that led to his parents' separation. The accident Cohen witnessed and the traumatic images he couldn't unsee. And the two children in the forest who became his friends--and enlisted him in a dark and dangerous undertaking. As the lines blur between what was real and what was imaginary, Cohen is faced with the question he's been avoiding:

Is he responsible for his father's death?

Master story weaver Shawn Smucker relays a tale both eerie and enchanting, one that will have you questioning reality and reaching out for what is true, good, and genuine.

My Review:
This is such an intriguing and thought-provoking book.  Shawn has an amazing talent for really drawing the reader into the story, really making the reader thing about things and leave them still thinking long after the book is done.  Cohen is caught between what is real and what is fantasy and how can he find out the truth, what really happened and is he the one to blame for his father's death.  I found myself wanting to keep reading as I needed answers to what was going on and I needed to find out more about the characters, as details were revealed bit by bit.  This has become my favorite book by Shawn and I am eager to see what he writes next!

Shawn Smucker is the author of the award-winning young adult novels The Day the Angels Fell and The Edge of Over There, as well as the memoir Once We Were Strangers. He lives with his wife and six children in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. You can find him online at www.shawnsmucker.com.

"The String"

Cover ArtBook Description From the Publisher:

Welcome to the string. Let's go over the ground rules.

Rule #1: Participation is mandatory.
Rule #2: If any one person refuses to play, the threats to all players will come to pass.

Since this is my game, allow me to introduce myself. I am the conductor. Just as musicians in a symphony must follow the conductor's direction, the selected students and staff of Trenton University must submit to my commands . . . or risk massive chaos and deadly consequences. Even that pesky university cop, Markus Haas, who thinks he'll find a way out of the impossible dilemma in which I've trapped him. Oh, the surprises I have for him.

Ready to play?
My Review:
Oh my goodness, this is a terrifying and completely consuming read!  Honestly, I was feeling anxious while reading this, holding my breath at times and trying to decide what I would do if I was ever placed in this position.  Markus is a university cop and dreams of being so much more and wishes for the respect that others in law enforcement receive.  However, he is not prepared for what is about to come as The Conductor is ready to roll out his plan and he has Markus right where he wants him.
I immediately liked Markus and found myself empathizing with him from the start.  As he gets involved with the plan that The Conductor has created, I found myself thinking about how I would respond if I was Markus.  The twists and turns in this story really held my attention and I did not want to stop reading until I reached the end.  This is a well-written debut novel and I am looking forward to the second book in this series!
