Betting on Hope
by Debra Clopton
Contemporary Romance
Thomas Nelson

One sophisticated advice columnist. One rough-around-the-edges cowboy. And an entire small town rooting for love. The first book in Debra Clopton's Four of Hearts Ranch Romance series, Betting on Hope, will win your heart!
Advice columnist Maggie Hope never dreamed she'd be shaking hands with champion horse trainer Tru Monahan over a high-stakes bet, especially one that involves horses. And saddles. And everything else a city girl like Maggie feels uncomfortable around. But after filling in for a coworker and interviewing the handsome cowboy, she finds herself doing just that. Anything to save her advice column.
Despite Maggie's two left feet, Tru is bound and determined to bring out her inner cowgirl by teaching her to ride a cutting horse --- in Maggie's eyes, a wild beast trained to separate cattle from the rest of the herd. While her riding improves, the two grow closer, but Tru knows he can never let her into his heart --- for her own good.
In Wishing Springs, a community full of meddling --- yet well-meaning --- townsfolk, Maggie discovers a home far from what she's ever had and exactly what she's always longed for. But she's holding something back---a secret with the power to destroy her reputation and any future she's ever hoped for with the cowboy she's come to love.

My Review:
I loved loved loved this book!  Debra has created such fun characters whom I loved spending time with and could relate to throughout the book.  Also, the storyline is great as well  - a newspaper columnist forced to fill in for a reporter on tv and getting suckered into a bet with an incredibly handsome cowboy, what isn't to love!?  Wishing Springs sounds like an amazing place to be as well; so homey, filled with loving, yet meddling people and described so beautifully.  Maggie and Tru are great characters and I highly recommend you picking up this book and spending time with them as well!

Book Review - "The Trouble With Patience"

"Maggie Brendan deftly captures the flavor of the Old West in a sweet love story filled with suspense and well-developed, interesting characters that will surely capture the hearts of readers."--Kathleen Morgan, author of the Brides of Culdee Creek series

Patience Cavanaugh has lost hope in romance. The man she yearned to marry is dead and her dreams are gone with him. Now she is consumed with restoring a dilapidated boardinghouse in order to support herself.

Despite Patience's desire for solitude, Jedediah Jones, the local marshal with a reputation for hanging criminals, becomes an ever-looming part of her life. It seems like such a simple arrangement: She needs someone with a strong back to help her fix up the boardinghouse. He needs a dependable source of food for himself and his prisoners. But as she gets to know this "hanging lawman," Patience finds there is far more to him than meets the eye--and it could destroy their tenuous relationship forever.

With a keen eye for historical detail and a deft hand at romantic tension, Maggie Brendan invites you to a Montana gold rush boomtown, where vices and virtues are on full display and love is lying in wait.

"Maggie Brendan has created a wealth of memorable characters in this heartwarming story. Romance, mystery, and an intriguing plot all add up to a winning combination that's sure to delight readers."--Margaret Brownley, bestselling author of Gunpowder Tea and Petticoat Detective

"Brendan is a master at tender love stories that tug at your heart while touching the soul, providing rich historical detail and tension that races the pulse."--Julie Lessman, award-winning author of The Daughters of Boston series

Maggie Brendan is the bestselling author of the Heart of the West and The Blue Willow Brides series. Winner of the 2014 Book Buyers Best Award (OCC/RWA) for inspirational fiction and the 2013 Laurel Wreath Award, she was a finalist for the 2013 Published Maggie Award of Excellence and the 2013 Heart of Excellence Readers' Choice Award. My Review:
I have been so looking forward to this new series from Maggie as I love her other books!  Maggie does an excellent job with creating the time period in her novels as well as the characters that they become so alive and real.  Patience is trying to move on with her life and is trying to revitalize her grandmother's boardinghouse in a mining town.  I loved her from the very beginning as she is a lively, and stubborn woman, but also passionate for her beliefs and tenderhearted.  Jedidiah's and Patience's interactions from the very beginning are entertaining and full of fire.  This town really grows on me quickly as Patience connects with various people and builds relationships as well as her business.  I really enjoyed this story with the historical details, loveable characters and the sweet romance.

Book Review - "The Crimson Cord"

"Rahab's story is one of the most moving redemption accounts in Scripture. The Crimson Cord perfectly captures all the drama of the original, fleshing out the characters with care and thought. Jill's storytelling skills kept me reading late into the night. A beautiful tale, beautifully told!"--Liz Curtis Higgs, New York Times bestselling author of Mine Is the Night
Cover Art

In one risky moment, she takes a leap of faith, puts her trust in a God she does not know, and vows to protect the spies from the authorities. When the armies of Israel arrive weeks later, Rahab hopes they will keep their promise, but she has no idea what kind of challenges await her outside Jericho's walls--or if she will ever know the meaning of love.

Under Jill Eileen Smith's talented hand, the familiar story of Rahab bursts forth in high definition. Immerse yourself in a world of dark and dusty streets, clandestine meetings, and daring escapes as a mysterious biblical figure claims her full humanity--and a permanent place in your heart.

Jill Eileen Smith is the bestselling author of the Wives of King David series, the Wives of the Patriarchs series, and The Desert Princess, first in the Loves of King Solomon series. Her research into the lives of biblical women has taken her from the Bible to Israel, and she particularly enjoys learning how women lived in Old Testament times. Jill lives with her family in southeast Michigan. Learn more at

My Review:
I have enjoyed every single one of Jill's historical/Biblical fiction novels and "The Crimson Cord" may be my very favorite!  This is Rahab's story whom is a character whom has always been a fascinating one to me and I have always enjoyed hearing her story when she has been a part of a sermon or a study.  Jill does such an amazing job with adding details to the story that brings the characters, the time period and setting to life, that I feel as if I am a part of the story.  It is obvious that Jill puts her heart into her research and into recreating these stories for the readers and I love how they really make me think more about the Biblical account, the characters' lives and the many lessons that can be learned through them.  As "The Crimson Cord" is book one in Jill's latest series, Daughters of the Promised Land, I am eager to hear news of the release of book 2!

My Review:
"Twisted Innocence" by Terri Blackstock is an exciting conclusion to her Moonlighters series and one I could not put down once I started to read!  Holly is the sister of focus in this book and she is a new mom and trying to be a good mother and turn her life around; however this is not easy being a single mom and trying to support herself and her daughter.  Holly's story starts out with a crime and I was immediately hooked on the story and rooting for Holly to make good choices and get her life on track.  I have really enjoyed this series as the characters are so real and the main characters (Holly's sisters) in the previous two books are part of the story still; I love when authors focus on a family for their series because then you can "revisit" characters.  My heart went out to Holly as she was trying to do the right thing and I will miss these girls now that the series is done.  This book is full of secrets, danger, second chances and redemption; Terri is a must-read suspense author on my list!

"Lighten up, y'all"

"Lighten up, y'all" by Virginia Willis is the latest cookbook to find a home in my kitchen!  This is a cookbook with a huge variety of recipes that are comfort foods, but are healthier than others may be.
Virginia shares her story of how she has always enjoyed cooking and she was raised in the South and she has stuck to her roots with her cooking, true Southern dishes - wholesome, made with fresh produce and homey.
I love the variety of dishes included in here, Virginia truly covers every course and there is such a wide variety in each category as well.  I love fresh produce and that was what originally drew me to this book; and I was not expecting so many unique recipes in here.  Don't get me wrong, there are so many classic recipes as well!
The photographs throughout this cookbook are gorgeous as well and make you want to make and eat everything that is pictured!
I am looking forward to trying so many of these recipes, including Sinless Seven-Layer Dip, Summer Squash "Lasagna," Basil-Peach Chicken Breasts, and Chocolate "Brookies."

Book Review - "Lethal Beauty"

Book Description from the publisher:

Mia Quinn discovers that a series of seemingly unrelated murders are linked. How far up are the strings being pulled-and what happens when one of her own is at risk?

The murder Mia is prosecuting seems like an open and shut case-until the accused claims he was the real victim and that the dead girl attacked him first. The tabloids dub her a "lethal beauty." Still, a conviction seems imminent. Then a key witness goes missing. Just when it looks like the killer could walk free, the dead woman's mother takes matters into her own hands.

Meanwhile, Charlie Carlson, a Seattle homicide detective, is investigating the murder of a man whose body washed up on the beach of Puget Sound, but he's got little to go on. He has no dental work, fingerprints aren't on file, and he doesn't match any missing person reports. Then a church pianist is senselessly gunned down before horrified parishioners.

All three cases seem unrelated-but are they? Together, Mia and Charlie race to find the answer before another crime hits too close to home.

My Review:
I have been a huge fan of Lis Wiehl's books from her very first one I read and each one just continues to be an excellent suspenseful read!  "Lethal Beauty" continues the Mia Quinn Mystery saga and I highly recommend that you read the first 2 books in these series before starting this one as it continues on from the previous novel.  Mia is dealing with issues in her own life with the death of her husband and adjusting to life without him, and now she has the interest of two men in her life and her workload continues to build and get more intense.  Mia and Charlie find themselves fighting for justice and trying to find answers before someone else is killed.  This is an exciting read from the very beginning to the very end; I was kept guessing the entire way through.  This is very suspenseful and so real that I was drawn right into the story and held captive until the very end.  I highly recommend this book and series for those whom enjoy suspense!

Book Review - "The Beauty of Grace"

"The Beauty of Grace" is a compilation of stories from various writers and includes photographs from the editor Dawn Camp.  This is an excellent book for today as it is has stories and reminders that we all need to hear and remind ourselves of as daily life is and can be a struggle with the general busyness, comparing ourselves to others via social media and living a life that is pleasing to God.  This is the perfect book when you need a "pick me up" as the stories/chapters are very short, sweet and to the point and have a verse to think on long after reading.  I loved that one of my favorite inspirational authors, Holley Gerth, was included in here as well as writing the forward, so of course I jumped right to her chapter, but that's what is nice about this book, you can pick it up and read a chapter, jump ahead to another, whatever you need at the moment.

"Mothering from Scratch"

"Mothering from Scratch: finding the best parenting style for you and your family," by Melinda Means & Kathy Helgemo, is a must-read for each and every mother!
As a mom I find myself comparing me as a mother to other women and their mothering styles, and their interactions with their children.  It is so easy to compare and then either feel guilty or inadequate as a mother; therefore this book was just what I needed!  This book will not only help you to not compare yourself to others, but it will help you really identify and create your own style of mothering and also feel comfortable with it as well.  I love how the authors share their hearts in this book and their style of writing; this book is so easy to really get into.  Each chapter ends with questions and thoughts to ponder, but also things to do to really put the thoughts and concepts shared in the chapter into action.  This is a wonderful book and one that I will reread many times.

Book Review - "Like a Flower in Bloom"

Siri Mitchell's latest novel, "Like a Flower in Bloom" is another great read from her and one that historical fiction fans will not want to miss out on!
It has been Charlotte and her father for years and she loves assisting her botanist father.  However, that changes when her uncle, the somewhat black sheep of the family, insists that it is time for Charlotte to live a proper life and find a husband.  Charlotte finds herself being replaced with her father by Edward and now there is no excuse for her to participate in society functions.  However, this is not what Charlotte wants and she is way outside of her comfort zone, her world.  Therefore, Charlotte devises a plan; however things do not go as she thought.
Charlotte is such a fun character to read about and spend time with!  Charlotte is socially awkward and her experiences and interactions are humorous that you cannot help but smile while reading.  I liked Edward's character as well and the role that he plays.  Siri does an excellent job with bringing the time period and societal expectations and daily living to life in her novels and I found myself transported back in time and into Charlotte's world.

Book Review - "Where Rivers Part"

Book Description from the publisher:
Dr. Juliet Ryan has devoted her considerable scientific acumen to corporate America, providing safe drinking water for millions--and affording her plenty of perks along the way. It's not the path her estranged father would have her take, but then Juliet finds it difficult to maintain respect for a man she cannot trust. She's on her way up in the world, and she's not going to let anything drag her down.

But when a fast-moving disaster sweeps Juliet into a whirlpool of corporate scandal, lives are at risk--including those of some of the people closest to her. As she scrambles to find answers, Juliet must face her deepest wounds and join forces with the one who has hurt her most in order to expose a far-reaching conspiracy.

Like a mighty river with twists and turns and hidden rocks, this engrossing story will sweep you relentlessly along as it fearlessly explores the seduction of success, the fear of giving up control, and the redemptive power of learning to forgive.

Praise for A Woman of Fortune

"Kellie Coates Gilbert delivers emotionally gripping plots and authentic characters."

"This tale of family and faith brings to light what truly matters in life and the desperate struggle to hold on to it."--RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

"Well-drawn, sympathetic characters and graceful language make this an engaging choice for readers."--Library Journal

Kellie Coates Gilbert is a former legal investigator and trial paralegal and the author of A Woman of Fortune. Gilbert crafts her emotionally charged stories about women in life-changing circumstances in Dallas, Texas, where she lives with her husband.

My Review:
I loved "A Woman of Fortune" by Kellie Coates Gilbert and was excited when I found out she had another book coming out again so soon!  "Where Rivers Part" is just as good as her first Texas Gold novel; I enjoyed it and I came completely engrossed in the story and immersed in the characters' lives.  Kellie has a great style of writing as she manages to seamlessly weave together various storylines combining scandal, past issues among family members, trust and forgiveness.   Kellie has become an author whom I am sure to stay updated on as far as new releases as she is now a must-read author for me.  I enjoyed the sneak peak for book 3 at the end of the novel and am anticipating the release of her next novel!

My Review:
I had been looking forward to reading Liz's latest novel, "Remember the Lilies" for months and was so excited when I received it and began to read right away!  I absolutely loved Rand and Irene's story!  Liz has such a talent for writing historical fiction as she brings the historical details to life in her stories and also brings the characters to live.  Rand and Irene were both so real to me and I loved them both right away.  The book begins with a brief prologue that introduces both characters to the reader and to each other, but then chapter 1 jumps ahead about 2 years and the characters are connected once more.  World War II has always been a time period that I have enjoyed learning about and Liz does an amazing job with sharing lesser known details about this time.  This book is set in the Philippines and I did not previously know much at all about how this area was affected by the war, but know I feel like I have a full awareness and understanding.  The romance is also very sweet in this story as well and I love the growth and development of the main characters throughout the story and within their relationship with each other as well.  I also have to note how much I love the cover on this novel, it is beautifully done. I highly recommend Liz's novels for historical fiction fans as they are ones you do not want to miss!

About the book:

Becoming a Spiritually Healthy Family: Avoiding the 6 Dysfunctional Parenting Styles (David C. Cook, January 2015)

We all want to guide our children into the abundant life that Jesus offers. In Becoming a Spiritually Healthy Family, Michelle Anthony unpacks six common dysfunctional parenting styles that we fall into out of habit, lack of attention, or just oversight due to busyness. If you long to show your children Jesus but don't know how to do it, you'll find hope in this practical guide to creating a relentlessly grace-filled home that is focused on God as first in charge.

Includes Scripture guides, reflection questions, ideas for family rites of passage, and other real life family examples.

My Review:
Michelle Anthony's "Becoming A Spiritually Healthy Family" is a must-read parenting book for all parents!  This book is such an encouraging and uplifting book that will boost your determination and convictions in regards to raising your children.  I find myself getting caught up in the busyness of life and the every day routine that it is so easy to let "little things" slide and picking and choosing battles, but ultimately choosing the easy way more often than not.   This is just the book I needed to really encourage me to stay strong.  There are sections devoted to 6 dysfunctional parenting styles and what consists of those.  Then there are ways to avoid these styles and better ways of parenting.  I found this book to be extremely useful and encouraging and I know I will be rereading sections and referring back to it time after time when I feel like I may need that little extra boost and encouragement.

About the book:

I Choose You Today: 31 Choices to Make Love Last (Abingdon Press, January 2015)

Married for nearly 38 years, author Deborah DeArmond and her husband have made the spoken declaration, "I choose you today" a regular part of their communication. It's when we least feel like saying it that we need to remind ourselves that love is a choice, not a feeling. I Choose You Today features 31 scriptural principles that support marriage and help couples develop healthy biblically based behavior.

Built on an introductory anecdotal story, each chapter has an inspirational takeaway of not only what to do, but how to begin applying the principles immediately. Thought provoking questions create talking points for couples to explore their own choices and experiences in each area serve to generate open dialogue of discovery. I Choose You Today is not a book of "shoulds," but one of clearly identified choices that each individual can make to grow their marriage and align it with the word of God. Every saying ends with a conventional wisdom quote.

My Review:
Each and every day and really in each moment we all make choices; choices that all lead to a result or consequence, either positive or negative.  Deb DeArmond has written a book encouraging couples to make deliberate choices in choosing each other and choosing to live each day in a way that will make their love last.  "I Choose You Today" has 31 chapters in it, and each chapter focuses on a specific choice to make to help couples.  I love that each chapter is so specific as it really allows your focus to be on that one thing, for example listening, really listening in a mindful manner.  Also, I really like the questions that are at the end of each chapter as this really forces you to reflect on your own relationship and how to apply the choice and concepts discussed to your own relationship.  This is a great read, as it broken down into many short chapters making it great to devote a few minutes each morning to reading a chapter and then having all day to really make it a priority and think about it.
I highly recommend you checking out the links I shared above as Deb as some great additional resources included that will really help you get as much as possible out of this book, but also living intentionally in your marriage every day of the year.

A journal time capsule

First of all, what an adorable book "Q&A a Day: 5 year Journal" is!  This is a perfect size to stick in a purse to take with you to pull out and write in when you have a spare moment, and it has a very classic look to it with the gold lined pages and the style of the cover and binding; I LOVE it!  Each page in the journal has a question and then it has space for you to answer that question for 5 years; thus allowing you to make a time capsule of sorts.  I love the variety of questions in this book as well.  For example, one question asks how many cups of coffee you have had that day and another question asks you to describe your victory dance and another is asking you to write down a quote for the day.  So, obviously some are going to require more thought than others and some are more fun and light.  This is such a clever idea and I am excited to be able to look back in a year, 2 years and even 5 years and remember what I was thinking on a certain day.  I highly recommend this book and it makes a unique idea for journaling.

My Review:
I really enjoyed this latest novella collection!  I have read books by each of each authors and love their work, so I was thrilled to see this collection.  Each of the stories is so sweet as babies are being born and these couples are adjusting to life with a new baby among the many challenges that arise.  There are some sensitive topics that are addressed in these stories and they are written about and handled well in my opinion.  I felt as if I could empathize with these couples throughout reading these novellas and they became so real to me, which is my book means that the author has done an excellent job with creating the characters and developing them.  I highly recommend this collection to anyone whom enjoys Amish stories and wants a quick, sweet read to enjoy.

Book Review - "It's Not Who You Know, It's Who You Are"

Pat Williams has teamed up with Jim Denney to write his latest book, "It's Not Who You Know, It's Who You Are: Life Lessons from Winners."  This book is divided into 5 sections: Success, Leadership, Family and Friends, Impact and Influence, Becoming a Person of Excellence.  There are so many stories shared in here from Pat's interactions with various individuals ranging from Kenny Rogers to Laura Bush to Walt Disney to Michael Jordan.  I love that each section begins with a quote, something that is catchy and helps make a connection with each person.  The chapters are pretty short so therefore it is easy to pick up the book and read just one or a few chapters at a time.  This is an inspiring book that is very enjoyable to read.

Six years ago, impossible circumstances forced Dr. Lisbeth Hastings to leave behind the love of her life, not just in another country, but in another time. He attempts to move on, to face the danger that is looming over Carthage, but when Cyprian's true love suddenly reappears, his heart becomes as imperiled as the fledgling church he seeks to save.

My Review:
"Return To Exile" is the second book in Lynne's Carthage Chronicles series and this is another exciting addition to the series.  I absolutely loved Lisbeth's character in book one and even more so in this book; so naturally I am looking forward to book 3!  This is such a drama and adventure filled book (and series!) that it immediately drew me into the story and held me captive all the way until the last page.  Lynne writes so well that the story flows seamlessly throughout time.  At first I thought it may be confusing at times to read, but I did not have any problems with following the storyline and keeping track of the characters and where they were at.  I highly recommend this novel for historical romance fans.

Paper Hearts by Courtney Walsh

Here is an adorable trailer of the newest novel from Courtney Walsh - "Paper Hearts" - Watch and Enjoy!

"Paper Hearts" is the perfect read to jump off the month of February with!  Welcome to a town where every day is Valentine's Day, love is in the air and the characters are so enjoyable to read about and spend time with!  Abigail is such a great main character and immediately I felt a connection with her and was completely drawn into her life.  I have to be honest that what first drew me to this book is the cover, it is fabulous!  I love the detail included in this cover, the layout of it, everything!  Then the blurb on the back cover is so intriguing as well and I did not want to stop this book once I started!  This should be a must-read for all contemporary romance fans this month!

Book Review - "River's Edge"

Book Description from the publisher:

The man Lisa Jackson loved most may have betrayed her.

Another used deception to manipulate her.

But did one of them kill her?

Ben Jackson is sure to defeat Jonathan Cleary in Cape Refuge's mayoral race, until his wife turns up missing the day before a major debate. Suspecting foul play, Police Chief Cade launches an island-wide search. But it takes a psychic's "vision" to point police to the riverside-and Lisa's body.

The evidence implicating Ben in his wife's murder is convincing. But as a local scandal escalates into a national media circus, Cade's instincts tell him to dig deeper. And he's not the only one. Blair Owens of the Cape Refuge Journal is using her investigative skills to uncover a rat's nest of dirty secrets-and more than one person with a motive for murder. But Blair's methods are jeopardizing her relationship with Cade, and an unsolicited prediction from the psychic only adds to her troubles. Is the man's so-called gift truly from God, as he claims?

Did Lisa's murder have anything to do with the mayoral race, her husband's alleged affair, or her decade-long struggle with infertility? Whoever the killer is, he's about to take his evasion of justice to the next, lethal level. And someone else is going to die.

My Review:
"River's Edge" is book 3 in Terri Blackstock's Cape Refuge series and this is a book that is difficult to stop reading once you begin!  It is fast-moving and one that has twists and turns all the way to the end.  I love how "real" the characters are in this book; I always enjoy reading about characters whom I can empathize with and who really become life-like.  There is also so much to this story, so many layers to it as it addresses  sensitive issues (infertility and marital issues), but also politics.  I highly recommend this book for those whom enjoy good clean suspense with excellent character development.

This handsome firefighter makes a living coming to the rescue, but Gin doesn't need a man to fight her battles.

After Raine's dad walked out, Ginevieve Lightly never lived in one place too long, a rambling lifestyle that defined her daughter's youth. When their car dies in Banister Falls, Wisconsin, Gin promises Raine they can stay until she finishes her senior year of high school. Gin will do anything to make sure her daughter has a bright future . . . a future that's compromised when Raine reveals she's pregnant.

Dan Moretti has only ever called Banister Falls home. After losing his best friend in a tragic accident, Dan devoted himself to responding to fires, rescuing the helpless, and guiding Cody Bennett, his best friend's son, through life. With Cody being the epitome of the good kid, it was an easy job. Until he says four little words: "The baby is mine."

Knowing gossip of Raine's pregnancy will erupt sooner or later in the small town, Gin's reflex is to grab the suitcase and escape to a new city, a new life. But with each passing day, Gin's feet stay rooted in Banister Falls, and she falls a little more for this local firefighter who shows her not all men abandon women at the first sign of smoke.

As Gin and Dan do the best they can to guide the two teenagers through their early entry into adulthood, they discover together that romance can bloom in the rockiest of situations. And God can turn the pieces of a broken past into a beautiful new beginning.

My Review:
I started this book one night intending to just read the first chapter, and before I knew it I was halfway through the book - it is that good!  I was immediately hooked on the story and completely involved in the characters' lives.  Kathryn is an amazing author as she has the ability to hook the reader right away with not only the storyline, but by creating such real-life believable characters as well and writing in such a way that their emotions can be felt by the reader.  I found myself connecting with all of the characters, even Evie, whom I struggled with liking at times.  I love how Kathryn will go back in time in some of the chapters providing background information as far as Gin's growing up years and why she has raised Raine the way she has and why she is so quick to want to pack up and flee.  Also, learning the history between Dan and Evie added so much to the story as well as they were best friends along with Evie's deceased husband, yet there are other feelings that have always been there as well.  I highly recommend this book as it is sweet romance along with heart-wrenching issues and this is a story and characters that will stay with you long after you finish reading the book.
