"Phoebe's Light" is book #1 in Suzanne Woods Fisher's brand-new series and it is a great start to the series! Phoebe has always taken care of her father and now she is ready for a new adventure that comes along with being an adult, living her own life. As she sets out for life on the ship as a wife of a sea captain she is not quite prepared for this way of life. Phoebe's father has gifted her with a journal of her great-grandmother. As Phoebe opens the pages and begins to read through them she is surprised by what she reads and what she finds written on the pages will change her life.
I absolutely loved this start to the series! Suzanne has done an excellent job with bringing this time period and way of life to life. Set in the late 1700's and a Quaker community there are many differences in the way of life then for Phoebe than life today in general society. This is a fascinating historical read as I have read some books focusing on the Quaker customs and way of living, but this is different as it is also set in a sailing community and on the shores of Nantucket. Phoebe is a strong main character and I instantly liked her. Although she tends to be a worrier, she is strong and eager for adventure and possibly a tad naïve, but then again, this is true for so many of us! I highly recommend this book for those whom enjoy historical fiction. I am looking forward to book #2 in the series!
