"Searching for Spring"

Image result for searching for spring

"Searching for Spring: how God makes all things beautiful in time" is really a beautiful, eye-opening book to read and become lost in.  Christine does an incredible job with really capturing the beauty in the world, all around us, in the unexpected areas and the expected ones both.  There is a season for everything and as the seasons change, our eyes are open to the beauty in our physical environments.  However, it can be difficult to see the beauty in the midst of hard times and times that we feel beaten and defeated and overwhelmed by daily life.  This book is a nice mixture of personal stories, scripture and imagery to portray these thoughts and really help awaken a person to seeing the beauty and remembering that God has a plan and purpose in His time.  My absolute favorite chapter is the one titled God is a joy whisperer.  This really resonated with me because it is so easy to go through each day completing the daily tasks, going through life just living and not enjoying life, not seeking and finding joy.
I think that this is a book that anyone, no matter where they are on their walk with Jesus, a new believer, one struggling to place faith and trust in God, or one whom has been a part of God's family for years, would appreciate this and find some peace and beauty within the pages.

"Marisol Spanish Rose" blog tour!

Marisol FB Banner

About the Book

Marisol_final
Book: Marisol Spanish Rose
Author: Elva Cobb Martin
Genre:  Christian Historical Romance
Release Date: November 8, 2019

Escaping to the New World is her only option…Rescuing her will wrap the chains of the Inquisition around his neck.

Marisol Valentin flees Spain after murdering the nobleman who molested her. She ends up for sale on the indentured servants’ block at Charles Town harbor—dirty, angry, and with child. Her hopes are shattered, but she must find a refuge for herself and the child she carries. Can this new land offer her the grace, love, and security she craves? Or must she escape again to her only living relative in Cartagena?

Captain Ethan Becket, once a Charles Town minister, now sails the seas as a privateer, grieving his deceased wife. But when he takes captive a ship full of indentured servants, he’s intrigued by the woman whose manners seem much more refined than the average Spanish serving girl. Perfect to become governess for his young son. But when he sets out on a quest to find his captured sister, said to be in Cartagena, little does he expect his new Spanish governess to stow away on his ship with her six-month-old son. Yet her offer of help to free his sister is too tempting to pass up. And her beauty, both inside and out, is too attractive for his heart to protect itself against—until he learns she is a wanted murderess.

As their paths intertwine on a journey filled with danger, intrigue, and romance, only love and the grace of God can overcome the past and ignite a new beginning for Marisol and Ethan.

My Review:
This book is such a great start to this series and I am anxious to read book #2!  Marisol is alone, pregnant and wanted for murder; this leads her to seeking an escape and solace which leads her to a pirate.  However, he is on his own quest and yet they both may be able to help each other.  I felt like the author did a good job with setting the scene and building up the story, as it was intriguing and I wanted to keep read to find out what would happen next.  I really liked both Marisol and Ethan and found them easy to empathize with as they both have pasts they are trying to move forward from and need to heal from.  This is a great historical romance novel!

More from Elva

A couple of things inspired me to write Marisol ~ Spanish Rose, in addition to my love of historical romance fiction set in the colonial/pirate era of Charles Town and the Spanish Main. I ran across a teaching of how people often let the one terrible moment of their lives define them and their future. Know anyone like this?

I envisioned a heroine in the 1700’s who let her “terrible moment”—being molested and accidentally killing the Spanish nobleman who attacks her—define her and her future destiny. My premise for this idea and novel is: Love, forgiveness, and determination can overcome the most horrifying experiences and poor choices when we invite God into the equation. Loving horses, particularly the white Lipizzaners, I named my heroine Marisol and set the attack on her father’s Andalusian Stud Farm in Cadiz, Spain in 1740. Andalusians are the Spanish horses in the ancestry of the Lipizzaners. And they can be trained to do dancing steps with a dancing maiden called the Flamenco, which my heroine can do well. Click here for a video of a flamenco dancer. https://youtu.be/lSQWQl0u_Ow Marisol’s exciting Flamenco plays a pivotal part in the novel. All this story idea needed now was an exciting, handsome Charles Town privateer—sometimes pirate—who will cross paths with my heroine when she flees Spain after killing the Spanish nobleman who molested her. Captain Ethan Becket, backslidden former Charles Town minister, has returned to the sea, grieving the loss of his wife and child.

By the time these two get together at the indentured block in Charles Town, Marisol has discovered she is with child. Thanks for stopping by! May you have an exciting, romantic adventure on the high seas with Captain Ethan and Marisol.

Book: Significant
Author: Carol McLeod
Genre:  Christian Living, Women’s Interest
Release Date: November 5, 2019

In the midst of our busy, stressful lives and the increasingly chaotic state of our world, we can lose sight of—or never really discover—our personal significance. We desire meaning and fulfillment but battle the stress and loneliness that often push their way into the forefront of life.
What makes you significant as an individual? As a woman? As a wife, mother, daughter, or friend? No matter what your age or current course in life, you can come to know your remarkable significance and eternal value. As you thirst for relief from stress and loneliness, you can build a foundation on what is divine and eternal, while also immensely practical for this life on earth. The truths God says about you as a woman are powerful and glorious!
In Significant, you will discover that you are the steward of your own self and will be challenged to embrace every season of your life. What is God calling you to do through the power of His Holy Spirit?  The days of cowering in fear, hiding behind insignificance, and wallowing in lack of opportunities are over. God is blowing doors wide open for women as never before. It is time for women to march forward in grand anticipation of all that God can do through even one woman submitted to the call of God and filled with His Spirit. So often we look for identity, purpose, and comfort in all the wrong places. We have sought lasting meaning from temporary fixes, immature voices, and cultural Band-Aids. This book is a call to women who possess a relentless desire to discover their unique purpose, to embrace their true identity, and to be comforted by irrepressible hope. Significant reminds women from every generation that identity, confidence, and purpose come from who God is—not from how we feel at any given time. How wonderful to know that we are allowed to be both God’s masterpiece and a work in progress at the same time!
You never know your true self until you know yourself in God.

My Review:
This is one of the best non-fiction books of the year, for so many reasons!  Not only is this book so relatable for me, and I think for so many others who may read it, but it is a strong foundation in the Bible.  Also, the chapters are short making it easy to read and work through both individually or with a small group.  Overall, this book is a beautiful reminder of the significance that I have, that each of us has, how important we are to God and that there is more than just rushing through life one stressful minute to the next.  I highly recommend this book for each and every woman to read.

More from Carol

Significant is the book that I have yearned to write ever since I was a young woman in college and was deeply impacted by Elisabeth Elliot’s classic work Let Me Be a Woman. That book, which Elisabeth wrote in the form of advice to her daughter, Valerie, on the brink of her marriage, taught me, in every way that mattered, how to be a woman of value and purpose. Elisabeth knew that the only way a woman could exert any lasting influence on her culture was to embrace the truths found in the Word of God.
I remember longing to have a profound influence on a generation of women the way Elisabeth did on the young women of my own generation. I aspired, even at the naive age of twenty-two, to be a voice of wisdom and purpose for the women who would come after me.
The years flew by, and soon I was a young mother who was homeschooling her brood of five creative, active children. Every school-day morning at ten, I sent the children off to read alone or to go outside to play so that I could turn on my little transistor radio and listen to Gateway to Joy, the thirty-minute program that Elisabeth Elliot hosted for many years. In that season of my life, I was smitten by her knack for calling me out of the daily routine of dishes, laundry, and little sleep to a sacred place of loving and serving the Savior. Elisabeth reminded me time after time that even the mundane can be transformed into a place of beautiful worship. Even today, I can still hear her voice saying, “Anything, if offered to God, can and will become your gateway to joy.”
Isn’t it interesting to realize that a person you have never met has the ability to change your life? As I have learned from so many people whom I have never met in person, I hope that my voice will not just be static in your world, but that you will clearly hear and take to heart the life-changing truths I present in this book. You can be assured that these truths have been gleaned by a real woman who has embraced the fulfillment and joy that comes from submitting her life to God’s abundant calling.

"The Freedom Challenge" book tour

The Freedom Challenge fb Banner

About the Book

FreedomChallenge_frontcover_FinalRevision
Book: The Freedom Challenge
Author: Dawn Scott Damon
Genre:  Christian Living, Women’s Interest, Personal Growth, Devtional
Release Date: March 22, 2019

Be free from toxic mindsets, destructive patterns of behavior, and lies that keep you bound.

The truth behind seven little words changed Dawn Scott Damon’s life when she heard a man from a small country church sing “I am who He says I am!” Her life was transformed as she began to believe what God’s Word says about who she is in Christ, and she started her journey out of betrayal, abandonment, and deception.

She shares compelling truths in a sixty-day interactive Bible study that identifies and confronts eight cords that keep many believers bound. These practical and powerful biblical tools are designed to give you a new mindset, a fresh beginning, and a clear direction for a positive future.

Take the Freedom Challenge and become an active participant in your own emotional and spiritual transformation. Through a guided, intentional, and interactive daily process of putting God’s Word into practice, the strongholds of destructive and bondage-making behavior in your life can be broken. Choose to take that first step to live free from deceptive self-talk, fear, depression, toxic mindsets, and debilitating lies, among others.

Thought-provoking questions, journaling space, confessions, and affirmations are included to help guide you toward freedom.

My Review:
This is such a fantastic book!  I love the layout of the book, how the chapters are divided, that there is ample space to answer questions and journal and so much good "stuff" in here that we all need to hear.  The book is divided into three sections and the majority of the book is a part of section 2 which is tackling all the cords that bind us.  A few of these are negative emotions and deceptive self-talk.  This main section of the book is set up to be worked through over the course of 60 days with specific pages for each day.  This may seem like a long time, but it is perfect for this, as each day consists of readings, questions and a blank section to journal and this should not be rushed through and reading so much at a time as smaller, specific information can be read and really pondered upon for the day before moving onto to more or something else.  I really felt like this book resonated with me and I cam going to go back through it and really take my time reading and praying and working through the readings and questions as there are cords that bind me and need untangling in order to live a life for me how God intends.  I highly recommend this book!

More from Dawn

As a little girl, I can remember singing in church with all my heart “Blessed Be the Ties That Bind.” Those ties that bind our hearts to one-another in love and to Jesus himself, are indeed blessed. But what about ties that aren’t blessed? Hi I’m Dawn and I’m super glad you stopped by today! I’m a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. At 19 years old, I became a wife and very soon after, a mother. After years of abuse, I was also a victim of rage and bitterness. The childhood sexual trauma was over, but the abuse aftermath—anger, pain, and depression—continued to destroy me. The cords of unwanted bondage choked joy and life out of me.  Today, I live fierce and free and serve as a freedom-coach to help others do the same. I’ve been on a journey for over 25 years, seeking God’s freedom through his truth and learning how to empower others to do the same. The Freedom Challenge: 60-Days to Untie the Cords that Bind You, is the map God gave me to find my way out of bondage, and now I’m sharing it with you! I pray you will also experience God’s glorious deliverance. And now some fun facts about me: I have a wonderful husband named Paul. Together we pastor a church called Tribes—but here’s the deal, he’s the “Pastor’s Spouse,” not me. I am a grandma of 11! It’s the awesomest—a word I use to describe it! I especially like what my grandson Colton calls me…Jam’ma. I love animals—all kinds—and I’ve determined there are absolutely no germs in dog kisses. I also have to admit, I adore anything that glitters or sparkles and someday hope to have a bling store. Lastly, I love Jesus and I still sing my heart out in church!

"The Bright Unknown" blog tour

The Bright Unknown FB Banner

About the Book

cover Bright Unkown
Book: The Bright Unknown
Author: Elizabeth Byler Younts
Genre:  Historical Romance
Release Date: October 22, 2019

Two young friends embark upon an epic journey across 1940s middle America in search of answers, a family, and a place to call home.

The only kind of life Brighton Turner understands is the one she has endured within the dreary walls of a rural Pennsylvania asylum. A nurse has thoughtfully educated and raised Brighton, but she has also kept vital information from her in order to keep her close. Brighton befriends a boy whom she calls Angel—he doesn’t know his name—and as the two of them learn more about what lies beyond the walls they call home, they fight for their release and eventually escape.

However, the world outside the only place they’ve ever known is not what they expect. They have no real names, no money, and no help—and they must rely upon the kindness of strangers as they walk and hitchhike from Pennsylvania to Michigan to find their last hope of a home.

This heartbreaking journey, narrated in gorgeous prose, explores what it means to belong—and to scour the universe with fresh eyes for the brightness within.

My Review:
This book is completely consuming and thought-provoking, I cannot stop thinking about Brighton and Angel even though I have finished reading the book and their story.  This is a coming of age story to an extreme as Brighton has only known one life, one way of living, as she has been raised in the asylum.  However, Brighton doesn't have a label like the rest of those living there in the home.  I was filled with horror at times, but mainly my heart was hurting for Brighton and at other times I had feelings of hope.  I could not stop reading since I had to know what would happen next and hopefully find answers to the many questions that arose while reading. Each and every person struggles at times with feelings of belonging and finding one's self and trying to fit in to his or her life; thus making this book so moving and a must-read.

About the Author

Elizabeth Younts
Elizabeth Byler Younts gained a worldwide audience through her first book, Seasons: A Real Story of an Amish Girl. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed novel The Solace of Water and the Promise of Sunrise series. Elizabeth lives in Central Pennsylvania with her husband, her two daughters, and a small menagerie of well-loved pets.

More from Elizabeth

The Bright Unknown was born out of a seed of a true story that my husband’s grandmother, Gigi, shared with me. Gigi told me that when she was a young girl living in Oklahoma her mom had a friend who was a nurse. During one of her visits over coffee she would occasionally talk about her patients at the local asylum. One particular story really intrigued Gigi and even decades later she still remembered it. The story was about a patient who had a baby while at the hospital and while Gigi remembers nothing about the patient or the child, she knew that when she moved out of Oklahoma several years later that asylum-born girl was around eighteen and still living within the walls of that hospital along with her patient-mother.
That story stuck with me. This trapped girl and her mother wouldn’t let me go. I began to wonder over her and ask all sorts of unanswered questions. Slowly but surely my imagined story for her came to life. Layer after layer I learned about Brighton, my name for her. I also named two characters after Gigi, her first and middle, as an honor to her. This story was born from a memory but now these characters feel real and present in my life today and I hope you will journey with them in The Bright Unknown.

"Essential Oils" blog tour!

Essential Oils Banner

About the Book

Essential Oils Cover
Book:Essential Oils
Author: Terri Secrest
Genre: Christian Non-fiction, Alternative Therapies
Release Date: October 8, 2019

Have you ever wondered why the wise men brought frankincense and myrrh for the baby Jesus? As a curious and highly enthusiastic child, health and wellness coach Teri Secrest asked everyone she knew and met, but no one could tell her. She grew up thinking it was just a nice little story…but never stopped wondering.
This thirst for knowledge sparked Teri’s twenty-three-year quest to learn about essential oils. It has taken her to the far corners of the world—from Croatia and France to Oman, Israel, and beyond.
Teri has written this book to share the mystery, the romance, and the ageless intrigue of essential oils. She hopes you experience the Father’s love as He continually lavishes His children with these exquisite oils and you feel this rich, biblical history come alive in your spirit. Teri wants you to see how miraculous your body is and how it’s designed to heal itself when given proper nourishment and support.
Essential Oils: God’s Extravagant Provision for Your Health offers practical how-to’s that you can use immediately, including the use of oils for romance, balancing hormones, cooking, cleaning, pets, children, and fragrance, as well as health concerns such as stress, negative emotions, trouble sleeping, weight gain, and anxiety. You will find practical guidance to regain and maintain health naturally.
As you gain this understanding, Teri believes you will change the next generation as you discover the hidden secrets of these biblical plants and how to incorporate them into your everyday life.

My Review:
This book is wonderful!  It has so much information included in and also ties in the scripture and God as He is the one who created everything.  I love the Christian/Biblical perspective to this book and feel like it added so much to it.  Honestly, I am new to the whole essential oil phenomenon that has exploded and while I enjoy diffusing the oils I did not know the uses, the benefits, the "why" of which oils I was using and should be using.  After reading this book I feel like I have a much better awareness and understanding as essential oils as a whole and also love the Biblical history tied in.

About the Book

Deadly Christmas Pretense Cover
Book: Deadly Christmas Pretense
Author: Dana Mentink
Genre:  Christian Suspense, Mystery, Romance
Release Date: November 4, 2019

A cowboy to her rescue…but she’s not who he thinks she is.

Posing as her sister for Christmas is the only way to save her, but Maggie Lofton needs help—even if it means working with her twin’s cowboy ex-boyfriend, Liam Pike. But between the bull’s-eye on her back and the dangerous connection she’s forming with Liam, Maggie’s mission is harder than expected. Will their tenuous partnership be enough to shield her when the killer closes in?

Book #2 in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series

My Review:

I "discovered" Dana's books a few years ago and she has become a must read author for me!  This latest novel is the perfect mix of romance and suspense and set during the Christmas season which is an extra perk!  Maggie pretends to be her twin sister, and requires help from her sister's ex as a means of survival and getting done what she set out to you.  Maggie finds herself trying to protect her life and her heart.  Maggie is such a great main character and I feel like the characters are what draw me into the stories so much as Dana does an excellent job with creating characters who come to life and that are so likeable, the reader wishes they were alive.  I love the ranch setting and getting to spend time with characters again who were introduced in book one of the series.  This is a quick read that will keep you turning the pages and will not disappoint in the least.

I just love Christmas, don’t you? In our area we have a lovely holiday train. It’s an old steam type train which is decked out in lights for festive holiday tours. I was so thrilled that this cover features just such a train. Of course, in the novel the train is the scene of hair raising danger! Maggie, our heroine in this novel, is a cook. She serves up some mouth watering dishes (when she’s not dodging a killer.) I thought perhaps you might enjoy a Mentink holiday family recipe! God bless you as we enter this holiday season!
