This book was such a great start to this new series by Lynette Eason! I had to stay up to finish reading this because I could not go to sleep without knowing how it would end. Asher and Brooke both served in Afghanistan and knew each other as Asher pulled Brooke out of the aftermath of an explosion. Now they are both back in the states and living their lives but both are dealing with the aftermath of serving and Brooke has unfinished business. Asher gets drawn in Brooke's life when he shows up at the office for his appointment and finds a woman dead and it turns out that Brooke was the target. Through their various connections they begin to try to piece together what is going on; however it is hard to see who to trust and who shouldn't be.
This book is fast-paced and Asher and Brooke are constantly looking over their shoulders and trying to stay ahead of those hunting them down and figuring out who all is after them. The horror of what is actually taking place with the children in the orphanage is unfortunately something that is real life and this was hard to read about, yet it is real and needs attention brought to that fact. Lynette weaves together these characters, their cases and perspectives together so nicely. I am anxiously awaiting for book #2 and more time with some of these characters.
