Book Review - "Blue Moon Promise"

I am a huge fan of Colleen Coble's writing; therefore I was so excited to see that she has a new series! "Blue Moon Promise" is book 1 in her Under Texas Stars series.

Lucy is taking care of her younger siblings alone and she is told that she can no longer live at their home by her landlord. This along with the mystery surrounding her father's death causes Lucy to agree to travel to Texas to marry a man she has never laid eyes on before. Nate is shocked when his father arrives home with a wife for him along with her younger siblings to care for. Neither Lucy or Nate are prepared for the danger that comes along or the feelings that grow between them.

This is such a great story! Nate and Lucy are both such lovable characters! They are both strong individuals who stand firm to face the trials in their lives and follow their hearts when their heads question their decisions. This book is an excellent start to this new series and I am looking forward to book 2 coming out!

Book Review - "Summer of Promise"

"Summer of Promise" is book 1 in Amanda Cabot's latest series, Westward Winds. We begin the book by joining Abigail Harding on a stagecoach on her way to visit her sister in June 1885 at an Army fort in Wyoming. Abigail is on summer break from her teaching position at a school in Vermont and she is concerned about her older sister Charlotte as her last few letters have left her concerned. Abigail's trip is eventful as the stagecoach is held up and they are able to continue on unharmed thanks to Lieutenant Bowles who is traveling on the coach as well. When Abigail arrives at the fort, her concerns about Charlotte are confirmed as she has been experiencing morning sickness, but also her marriage to Jeffrey is not as good as she would like everyone to believe. What is supposed to be only a short-term visit is slowly turning into a longer visit as Abigial feels her sister needs her, but that is not all that is keeping her there. Abigail finds herself drawn to Lieutenant Bowles, Ethan, as he has become a part of her every day life and she has feelings about Ethan that she has never experienced towards Woodrow, the man she is soon to be promised to and who is waiting for her in Vermont. Mystery surrounds the stagecoach robberies that continue to occur, Jeffrey's absences from the home at night, Charlotte's health issues, and Abigail's desire to help those around her keep her in Wyoming and wishing for home in Vermont less and less.

This is an excellent book! I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out as I felt as if the end was a little abrupt and while loose ends were tied up, there are still things left unanswered as well. There is so much to this story as Abigail and Ethan must deal with things in their lives and Jeffrey and Charlotte both have struggles within their marriage and personal as well. The minor characters add so much to the story and I hope that Oliver, Leah and Dietrich are a part of the next book as well. This is a great historical fiction book filled with details of the time period, romance and suspence.

Book Review - "Where Wildflowers Bloom"

Ann Shorey's new series, Sisters at Heart, has captured my attention with book 1, "Where Wildflowers Bloom." Faith lives with her grandfather and her memories of her family who has passed away as a result of illness and the Civil War. Wanting nothing else than to be free of these memories each and every day, Faith is determined to travel West. However, her grandfather does not share the same dream. Faith is running the family mercantile while still continuing to make plans for the trip.
Faith gave her heart away to Royal Baxter years ago as he was preparing to leave for the war. Believing that he was killed just as her father and brother, Faith is shocked when Royal rides back into town and even more shocked and embarrassed when he does not remember her as she does him. Royal begins to court Faith much to her delight and her grandfather's chagrin as he would like Faith to court Curt instead. Curt who works at the livery and seems to be always helping out Faith and her grandfather is also dealing with his own scars from the war and does not know if he is ready to be involved with a girl. Rosemary, Curt's sister, becomes a dear friend to Faith - just like a sister in fact. Faith begins to struggle with what to do as she does not want to hurt her grandfather, yet she believes the move would be the best for both of them. Faith is confused as to her feelings toward Royal and Curt, does she love Royal or is he her ticket to the West and if she loves Royal, then why does she desire to see Curt and spend time with him?

This is an excellent historical fiction novel! It is very well-written and was filled with so many details of the time period! I am looking forward to the rest of the series! I am assuming and hoping that the rest of the series with be Rosemary, Amy and Cassie's stories as these girls are all "Sisters at Heart."

Book Review - "Shadows on the Sand"

I was pleasantly surprised when I began reading Gayle Roper's "Shadows on the Sand" as she is a new author to me and this book is so much more than I expected!

Carrie and her younger sister Lindsay run away from home and begin a new life in New Jersey. Under the guidance of their "Godmother" they work at and now a diner. A teenage girl Andi working at the diner reminds Carrie much of herself at that age and seeks to gain her trust and help her. However, Andi is not willing to share her secret as she does not want anyone else to get hurt especially when Jase is found murdered. Although all fingers point at Andi's boyfriend Bill, Andi knows it was not him as Andi knows Jase from her life before living in New Jersey and working at the diner.
Greg goes to the diner every morning for breakfast and orders food he does not even like just to try and avoid memories of his deceased wife and children. Greg suddenly notices Carrie and believes it is time for him to move on, not just relationship wise, but in life overall as he used to be a cop, but since the deaths of his loved ones he has been managing properties. As Greg gets pulled into the mystery surrounding Jase's death and the disappearance of Andi, Greg learns that he can move on and he has more strength than he thought with God's help.

I really enjoyed this book! It has all of the elements for a great story - mystery, secrets, romance, healing. The characters all live out their lives strongly with hope and faith in God, but they are not pushy toward others who do not live the same way, instead they encourage them by their example. Mary P plays such an important role in this book, from taking in Carrie and Lindsay when they so desperately needed the help to being their for the girls when their mother and her husband show up suddenly at the diner. Clooney, Mr. Perkins and Cilla all play such great roles in the story as well and are such lovable characters! I cannot wait to read more of Gayle Roper's books!

Book Review - "The Exceptional Life"

Stephen Arterburn's latest book, "The Exceptional Life: 8 powerful steps to experiencing God's best for you" is an eye-opener and an encouraging read!
Each chapter discusses one of the eight steps that a person needs to take in order to experience God's best. Each step consists of giving up something, but when something is given up, something is gotten back. For example, the first chapter is "give up guilt and shame; get back hope." This book is excellent to read on your own; however it would also be a great book to do as a part of a small group as each chapter concludes with questions for further discussion that enhance what was just read. While reading this book, it feels as if the reader is in a conversation with the author, thus making the book an easy and enjoyable read.

This book touches on some "heavy" issues and areas that may bring up negative emotions or memories; however it will also fill you with hope for being a better person and really experiencing the best that God desires for each of us.

Book Review - "Small Space Organzing"

With the start of a new year, I have been trying to be better organized at home. Kathryn Bechen's "Small Space Organizing" is filled with ideas and tips for decorating and organizing rooms, closets and really every inch of your home!

Although this book is named and geared for small spaces it is really applicable to everyone no matter the size of their home! Each room and area of your home has a chapter devoted to it, including foyers/entry ways! The author shares personal antidotes, websites for additional tips and resources for each room and space for you to write in your own notes. The lighting, furniture placement, storage options and the "feel" of a room are all addressed making this a thorough resource to refer to while trying to redecorate and organize your home.

I find this book to be invaluable! It is jam-packed with information! I had read tips for how to make rooms look less cluttered or making it appear to be larger and more open. Bechen shares great ideas in regards to storage and different uses for things other than the usual, such as suitcases and ottomans. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to make changes in their home, update various rooms or areas without spending a ton of money or just to become more organized.

Book Review - "Beyond Molasses Creek"

A new author to me, Nicole Seitz, captured my attention in the very first chapter of her latest novel, "Beyond Molasses Creek," and held it until the very last page!

My review:
There is always a place that is "home" to each of us. Ally returned home to bury her father, a home where she fled years earlier to escape from her past. Meeting up with Vesey brings the past to the present and she must make decisions. I really enjoyed the author's style of writing as it transported me to Molasses Creek and Ally's life. Ally and Vesey's relationship is complicated, but it has elements that many of us can relate to within our own relationships with others, especially best friends. The language and writing are also very descriptive and add so much to the story. This will not be the last of Seitz's novels that I will read!

Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey take you on a breath-taking, high-energy journey in their novel, "Chasing Mona Lisa" as four individuals race against time to save this masterpiece.

Bernard has given so much of his time and life to the resistance effort in France. Much of his effort he has not shared with Colette his girlfriend. However, Bernard is not the only one holding back as Colette works as curator at the Louvre and she knows the exact location of the Mona Lisa, but she is being blackmailed by a high-power German gentleman. Eric and Gabi appear to the general public as working for the Red Cross, but are in fact Swiss OSS agents sent on missions and are caught in Paris on the day of liberation. Meeting up with Bernard and Colette saves their lives on this day, but soon they find that they are all fighting for lives and not just from the Germans.

This novel is filled with so much historical detail from the World War II period and the culture and pride for one's country is so rich. I was immersed in the story from the very beginning and enjoyed it all along the way throughout the various twists and turns. All of the characters were well-developed, even the minor characters. I loved the roles that the banker, Captain Palmer, the Countess and Kristina all played as well. This is a wonderful novel and I am going to read the authors' previous novel, "The Swiss Courier" and learn more of Gabi's story!

Book Review - "The Keeper"

Fans of Suzanne Woods Fisher must read her latest book, the first in her Stoney Ridge Season series, "The Keeper!" This book is an emotional read that will tug at your heart and keep you reading page after page.

Julia is trying to take care of her family as her mother passed away years ago and her father is struggling from heart failure. It's an overwhelming task as each person has their individual struggles and then on top of that her crazy uncle causes embarrassment and others to look down upon the family. Julia believes things are spinning out of control when her fiancee once again postpones the wedding, the Bee Man returns to town and a woman shows up to run the household and help out. Soon, Julia realizes that this may be the best thing for her and her family.

This book is filled with so much and so many various struggles and experiences. Just because the family is Amish, they are still dealing with struggles just as the "English." The family is struggling with money issues, Julia's younger sister Sadie deals with being overweight, Mennon is developmentally delayed, Julia believes she's in love with her fiancee Paul, but yet she has feelings for Roman, the traveling Bee Man, and her father is dying from heart failure. Sensitive subjects are discussed as a heart transplant is considered and when one is available from horrible situations, the family must look on the bright side although they are filled with grief.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Amish fiction!

Book Review - "Sisters of the Quilt: the complete trilogy"

Once I start reading a series I like to read it straight through beginning to end; therefore I was so excited to see the three novels of Cindy Woodsmall's "Sisters of the Quilt" series in a complete trilogy edition! Woodsmall's "Sisters of the Quilt" includes the three stories of the series that have previously been released as single novels. Hannah Lapp is struggling to know her place, her beliefs and what her heart feels in the first book of the trilogy, "When the Heart Cries." Hannah is in love with an older man who is more worldly than she and her family and she accepts his marriage proposal. Tragedy brings other issues to light and disruptions for not only Hannah, but her best friend and brother as well.
Hannah's story and journey continues in the second book "When the Morning Comes." Not being treated kindly by her Amish community, Hannah disappears into the English world to try and find solace there. Although she is still in love with Paul, Hannah meets someone new who is accepting of her; yet this adds to her struggles as well. This is a highly emotional book as the reader will feel for Hannah through her new experiences and struggles and also Hannah's family and community as they are dealing with her disappearance.
"When the Soul Mends" is the last book in this trilogy and it an engrossing ending to this series. Hannah hopes to help her sister and returns home to do so. Hannah is faced with choosing between her two worlds and questioning her decision to leave over two years earlier.
This is a well-written and captivating series! You are not going to want to put it down once you start! Hannah's struggles, heartache, love and decisions will have you hurting alongside her, cheering her on and being torn between her loves and worlds.

Each son needs his father as a role model starting from day 1 of his life and continuing throughout his adult years. Michael A. O'Donnell, PhD has written a book, "What a Son Needs From His Dad: how a man prepares his sons for life," to encourage and guide fathers with raising sons. This book focuses on the roles that fathers play in their sons' lives. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect, for example, chapter 7 focuses on helping one's son choose the right friends and chapter 4 is about preparing your son to work. Children cannot just be thrown out into the world with no guidance and expected to be successful and O'Donnell has created a guide that will help fathers be that guiding force balancing giving love, guidance and being a teacher and role model.

This book is well-written as it is easy to follow and understand and organized into well-defined chapters. The book is also interactive as there are some spaces for questions to be reflected upon and answered. Each chapter ends with questions for thought and discussion. This would make an excellent resource for a small group. It is insightful for mothers to read as well as it will open their eyes as to the roles that the fathers play in their sons lives and they can be supporters and an encourager to their husbands in this area.

Book Review - "That's My Girl"

What better way for dads of girls start out the year than reading Rick Johnson's book, "That's My Girl." This is a honest, man to man book that I would recommend for any man who is the father of a daughter. This would also be a great resource to use in a men's small group as each chapter ends with questions for further thought and discussion.

Rick shares his own experiences with raising a daughter and his perspective on different issues along with research and stories from other individuals. Rick encourages dads to bond with their daughters even though this may not be as natural for them as bonding with their sons, however this is so important. Dads are role models for their daugthers as to the males that they will date and marry in the future. Rick addresses different aspects of role modeling including treating women, especially their wives/daughter's mother with respect, care and love as this is how the daughter is going to expect to be treated by her future husband. Daughters are only little for just so long and now is the time for dads to build on their relationship and be good example for their daughters. Not only is this an excellent read for dads, but it is for moms as well as it will open moms' eyes as to the role that the father plays and she can be an encourager to him to fulfill this role in the best way possible.

This book is straight-forward, yet it has a gentle approach as well so that it is not intimidating or "preachy." I would highly recommend Rick's other books as well that focus on sons and also being a better spouse.

Book Review - "Then Sings My Soul Book 3"

I have enjoyed the previous two books in this series and I was not disappointed with this newest edition! Robert J. Morgan has complied interesting facts about composers and hymns in his latest collection, "Then Sings My Soul Book 3."

There are many hymns that are shared in this book that I am not that familiar with and I loved this as I was to read new songs. Knowing the stories behind hymns are fascinating and interesting as to how they tie in with history and also give insight to the writers as to who they were and their lives. This is a great gift for anyone who is interested in music, history and knowing the origins of beloved hymns.

Book Review - "The Accidental Bride"

I know that I, like many other Denise Hunter fans, have been waiting anxiously for another book to be released! "The Accidental Bride" is book two in A Big Sky Romance series and is just as good if not better than book one!

Shay struggles day at day with just keeping her ranch and home as money is tight. She has no idea that when she agrees to play a bride in the Founders Day celebration that her life is going to be completely changed and she will now be trying to keep her heart intact as well! Travis was her high school sweetheart and Shay finds herself face to face with him at the end of the aisle and in the midst of confusion and a mistake Shay and Travis find themselves legally married! Is it worth saving her ranch if she loses her heart?

Denise Hunter has not disappointed in any way with this new book! It was impossible to stop reading and I fell in love with the characters and became immersed in their lives. Shay, Travis and Olivia are all such real characters and a family who you would love to have as neighbors. This is a must read for Hunter fans and one to add to your collection!

Book Review - "Smitten"

Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Denise Hunter, and Diann Hunt, four wonderful authors, have joined together to write a great collection of stories in "Smitten." Each of the four authors write a novella and each novella is about a different woman, yet they are all connected!

Smitten, Vermont is a town that is kept afloat by the lumber mill that hires so many people living in the town. Julia, Natalie, Shelby and Reese, four friends, devise a plan to "save" their town when the lumber mill is closing. They do not want their town to "close" or die along with the lumber mill. The four friends decide that their town, Smitten, is the perfect romantic getaway spot and begin to work on this idea and saving the town. Not everyone is thrilled with the idea, including the men in the town and yet some of the men join them on the project as well. Not only are these women promoting the town as a romantic spot for tourists, but they find that it may be a romantic spot for them as well.

I really enjoyed this book - all four stories! Each author writes from a different woman's perspective and shares her story, yet they are all joined together to create a great story! There is humor interspersed and the misunderstandings and love make for a great read! A great light-hearted read!

Book Review - "The Christmas Singing"

I am a huge fan of anything Christmas and I love Amish stories as well, so I was so excited to be able to read Cindy Woodsmall's new book, "The Christmas Singing." This is a quick read and a beautiful hardcover edition! I love the scene on the front of the book - so perfect for this time of year!

Mattie had her heart broken years earlier on Christmas Eve and now she must face this rejection and decide how to handle this hurt. Gideon wanted to protect Mattie, but ended up hurting her anyways and now he knows that the truth is the best and only way to handle things. During the three years since their broken engagement Mattie has moved on physically to a new town and also emotionally as she has a new beau. Circumstances bring Mattie back home and back in contact with Gideon, has Mattie really moved on to far or is the love still there between the two?

This is a well-written story that will enjoyed every year at Christmas time! Mattie and Gideon are both such lovable characters and I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning of the story. This is a great story as well for each of us on forgiveness, trust and telling the truth. A must read for Amish fiction fans!

Review - "The Names of God Bible"

"The Names of God Bible" is a wonderful edition of the Bible for anyone who wants to study the Bible more in depth. This is a nice hardcover Bible edited by Ann Spangler who is the author of "Praying the Names of God." I have not ever had a Bible that is a God's Word translation, so it is a little different at first, but it is very easy to understand. There are so many different names of God and names that are used in reference to God. This Bible goes into great detail about the various names of God giving the reader a deeper understanding of God and who He is. Each book of this Bible begins with a description of the book and also which names of God are found in that book. I found these introductions to be very interesting and a great perk to this Bible! There are also reading plans included at the end of the Bible which is a useful tool for those wanting to stick to a consistent reading schedule. I would recommend this for a new Christian or for anyone who wants to get to know God on a deeper level.

Book Review - "The Christmas Shoppe"

If you are looking for a quick read to put you in the Christmas spirit, Melody Carlson's "The Christmas Shoppe" is just the book for you! Matilda purchases a store much to the dismay of many residents as this is on Main Street and neither the store's wares or Matilda have the right "look" for this area of town. Susanna, new city manager, is trying her best to do a good job and keep everyone happy at the same time. Susanna is not only trying to keep peace with the council members, but also her mother-in-law in line as well. When Susanna's mother-in-law and daughter begin to spend time with Matilda and form a bond with her, Susanna realizes that this may be more difficult than she thinks until she ventures into the shoppe herself. This town is filled with people who are hurting, seeking for something or needing to find peace and/or forgiveness in regards to their past. No one would have guessed that Matilda is helping each person to heal when he or she walks into her shop.
This is a very quick read, but it is filled with charm! The characters are all such interesting people and while they all try to put on a good front, they are really hurting and needing something. What they each need is found in Matilda's shoppe and each person's story is shared a little bit more with the reader. There is so much packed into this story and you will finish the book feeling happy for the characters and also thinking what you would pick up if you happened to come upon Matilda's shoppe yourself!

Book Review - "A Wedding Invitation"

Alice J. Wisler's "A Wedding Invitation" is more than just a tale of a wedding, but a tale of new love, and a reconnection with a love from the past and family relationships.
Samantha received a wedding invitation in the mail on a cold, blustery night and the outer envelope is blown away. Upon arriving at the wedding and not knowing anyone, not even the bride who she thought was her college friend, Samantha ponders her options. Deciding to stay, Samantha spends quite a bit of time with another guest, Taylor, and this begins a relationship between the two. Samantha also reconnects with Carson, another teacher with whom she worked years ago at a refugee camp. Carson brings back memories for Samantha and also past hurts. Meeting up with a former student forces not only Samantha and Carson to work together, but these two along with Taylor.
This story has many layers to it. Samantha and her mother work together in her mother's high-class clothing boutique. There relationship is a large part of this story as well as Samantha's relationship with her Aunt Dovie. The differences between the aunt and mother are interesting as well. The book goes between the present time in the story (1993) and 1985 when Samantha and Conner are working together. The past adds much to the story and gives a lot of extra insight into their relationship and why it is what it is. This is a well-written and well-developed story.

Serita Jakes' novel, "The Crossing," is a thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, all too real read that will have you hanging onto every word and turning pages.
Claudia is reliving the moment that her friend and cheerleading coach was murdered on a school bus on the way home from a football game. Claudia has been for the past 10 years. Claudia's husband wishes to solve this crime and unravel the mystery that surrounds this incident as a means of helping Claudia move on and work through the tragedy. What he does not know are the secrets that are buried and twisted within this tragedy as well. Casio is now a police officer, but he was wounded while traveling on that bus that night as a football player. Casio is dealing with this incident still as it has lead to him having anger management problems and ultimately ruining relationships in his life now.
This is a story that keeps on turning and changing keeping the reader guessing and on the edge of his or her seat! This story is so realistic and the aftermath for individuals and communities are very real. The characters are suffering from PTSD, anxiety, anger, and fear. Do not expect a pleasant read, but yet one that is very real and you will become a part of the character's lives and the daily struggles that they deal with.

This book is filled with very realistic characters who the readers will empathize with and want to know more about. No group of people are immune to those who like to spread gossip and add to problems while trying to help. This is a quick read and one not to be missed for those who enjoy religious fiction.

Innocent Emechete has compiled a collection of stories that were orally passed down through generations in Africa in the book, "Animal Stories Daddy Told Us." There are sixteen stories in this book that each have animals as their main characters. These animals all struggle and deal with issues that humans do as well, such as deceit and revenge. Each story has a lesson or moral to share with the reader. There are illustrations throughout the stories as well adding great detail to them.
This book is not necessarily geared toward children as some of the lessons and topics are not really appropriate for young children. The stories would be a great tool to use with young adults in a creative writing class or in a class that focuses on culture, worldviews and morality. Each story has questions that are great to use for a discussion after reading each story.

"Nowhere Hair" written by Sue Glader and illustrated by Edith Buenen is specifically for children who have a family member dealing with having cancer. This would be a perfect book for a child who has a mother or grandmother who is losing her hair due to cancer treatments.
The girl's mother has been diagnosed with cancer and she loses her hair as a result of the treatments she undergoes. The girl is worried about her mom, wonders if the cancer is her fault and wonders where her hair has all gone. She is reassured that it is not her fault, and she sees her mom wearing all sorts of hats that help in numerous ways.
This is a wonderful resource for children! It is an upbeat book, but it addresses the concerns and feelings that children will experience in this type of situation. Losing hair can be scary for children and this is a great way for it to be explained to children.

"Just Fine the Way They Are" written by Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge and illustrated by Richard Walz is an account of how the world has moved from having dirt roads to rail roads to interstates.
John Slack, the tavern keeper, is happy with life and believes things are fine just the way they are with the rutted dirt road. Slack is resistant to the changes that congress and others want with building a main road and a railroad. With each change that comes along, it is believed that it is fine and travel is made easier and easier, but as time goes on there are always ways to make it even easier and better. Just as it is with many things today, some are resistant to change, but then when it occurs, the changes are adapted to and even appreciated after time.
This is a beautiful account for children that displays how times have changed with travel through the years. The illustrations are beautiful and filled with details that children and adults will love to look at. There is a thorough time line included as well. This would be a great resource for elementary classrooms.

Colleen Coble's fourth Lonestar book, "Lonestar Angel," is the best yet!
Eden is shocked when her ex-husband Clay shows up just as her boyfriend is about to propose to her and says that they are in fact still married. Not only that, but they have not seen each other in years, even since their infant daughter was kidnapped and they suppose murdered, and now Clay says that their daughter is alive and is at a ranch for a summer camp experience. Clay and Eden set off on a journey to rediscover their daughter and work at this camp as counselors. Not knowing which of the girls is their daughter, Clay and Eden must do detective work of their own. When Eden's life is threatened time after time, they realize their is more to the mystery and they must rely on each other and their friends as well.

This is a great book filled with love, hope and suspense! The relationships between the characters are intricate and fascinating. Coble makes the connections in such a way that I was left guessing and surprised at a few of the twists and turns. This is a must-read for Lonestar fans as it has the characters from the earlier novels!

Bogart begins the book with "Knitting can't feed the hungry, fight crime, or stop global warming. But a hand-knit sweater warms a cold child. A cozy scarf eases a homeless night. A tiny hat comforts a preemie head. A lovely prayer shawl wraps a worried patient in peace. Knitting quietly eases some of the hurts in the world. God needs eager knitters to supply these comforts." What a beautiful way to look at the task and art of knitting!
This is a quick, inspiring read that will have you picking up your knitting needles or filling you with the longing to learn how to knit! The book is well-written and well-organized with a different focus for each chapter. A must read for anyone who loves to knit and anyone who needs a little warmth and comfort!

This has been my candle of choice to burn lately, the smell is just so wonderful and true to the scent of actual granny smith apples!

Last Saturday we went to an apple orchard and picked 5 bushels of apples. There is nothing like apples, an orchard, the sight and smell of this to put you in an autumn state of mind! So now it means time for canning apple pie fillings, making and freezing applesauce and smelling that scent of apples throughout the house.

I know during these next few days I'm going to be burning the macintosh scent as well as this is another "appley" scent.

Book Review - "The Measure of Katie Calloway"

Serena Miller's historical fiction novel, "The Measure of Katie Calloway" is a must-read for everyone who enjoys historical romance! A new author to me, Miller drew me into the story and I am hoping she comes out with many more novels!

Katie Calloway is living a difficult life being that she is a Yankee married to a Confederate who has returned home from fighting in the Civil War to find his home destroyed. Suffering from the emotional and physical abuse from Harlan was one thing to deal with, but when Katie discovers that Harlan is trying to kill her she decides she must run away. Katie flees with her little brother Ned who is in her care to a place where she knows Harlan will not look for her, Michigan. Katie bakes an apple pie and is offered the job of being a cook, but not just a cook, a cook at a lumber camp. Changing her name to Katie Smith and hiding her past Katie begins a whole new life and gains self-respect and courage along with this new life. However, Katie is also being to love her employer, Robert, but she is still legally married. In the midst of trials and also joy Katie and Robert must both face their pasts, lean on God and begin to heal.

This book is very well-written and is so enjoyable to read. The characters are all so real and I felt like I was at the camp with them. There are just enough twists to the story keeping it interesting and the story moves along at a good pace, although I did not want the story to end as I wanted to keep on spending time with the characters. The time period is so vividly portrayed and although I have read many books set during the civil war and right after, I have never read a book quite like this as it is set mainly in a lumber camp. Everything about this book was well done and just an excellent book overall!

Book Review - "Softly & Tenderly"

"Softly & Tenderly" is the second Songbird novel written by Sara Evans with Rachel Hauck. Jade's story continues in this novel. Jade is balancing being a wife, running two shops, taking care of her mother who is battling cancer and yet there is something lacking in her life, being able to carry and birth a baby. Jade longs to have a baby after having three miscarriages and then suddenly her husband is asking her to help raise his son, but it is his son with another woman. Jade feels like she needs room to breathe and takes off for her childhood home for time and space to think.

I enjoyed getting to know Jade and the other characters in the first novel, "The Sweet By & By" and I have grown to love them all even more! Jade has so much going on in her life and she is such a realistic character and one you cannot help but empathize with. Evans and Hauck pulled me right back into Jade's life with the very first chapter of Jade helping out her mother-in-law and then discovering that her in-laws' lives are not really what they appear to be. The style of writing is so easy to read and follow and it draws the reader in and hooks her there until the very end! I am looking forward to the next book coming out early 2012!

Book Review - "Attracted to Fire"

Diann Mills' latest novel, "Attracted to Fire" is one of the best books I had read lately! Filled with suspense, romance, deception and overcoming one's past, this book kept me reading page after page, but at the same time I did not want the book to end.

Special Agents Megan Connors and Ash Zinders are assigned to the same detail - protecting the Vice-President's daughter Lindsay. This is not as easy as it seems as it appears that someone is leaking information furthering putting Lindsay in danger, people are being killed and attraction is building between Megan and Ash. Lindsay had gotten pulled into the dark world of drugs, alcohol and deception, but she cannot seem to find a way out or whom she can actually trust.

Filled with twists and turns and "good" people really on the wrong side and those who have gotten sucked in without hope of staying alive if they try to escape will keep you on the edge of your seat reading. The characters are so likable and I found myself trusting both Megan and Ash along with Lindsay and Chip. I was surprised at a few twists along the way and finding out who was on what side, and I was hoping that some of the characters were not tangled up in the mess. I highly recommend this book and I am hoping that Mills will write some more novels with some of these same characters in them!

Book Review - "Hello, Hollywood!"

"Hello, Hollywood!," book 2 in Janice Thompson's Backstage Pass series is now available! You will for sure want to have read the first book in the series ("Stars Collide") before reading this as it picks up where book 1 left off and the characters are so fun to read about you won't want to miss out on a single page with them!
Athena Pappas is the head script writer for a popular sitcom, but suddenly a comedian is hired to write on the team to hopefully boost ratings. It's hard to focus at work when she is fearful of her job being given away to this newcomer and also when there is definite chemistry between the two as well! Stephen is seeking stability and a better life for his daughter and is thrilled with the chance to write for the popular show. What becomes even more important is his relationship with not only Athena but her entire family and also how his daughter seems at home with them as well. Athena and Stephen are pros at scripting the lives of the characters on the show, but real life does not follow a script as they are off on a journey towards love filled with doubt, fear, secrets and hope.
I really enjoyed this book and I have to say I like it better than the first and I really enjoyed that one as well! I loved getting to know all of the characters better in this novel - Kat, Scott, Lenora, Rex, and meeting a bunch of new ones including Aunt Melina and Brooke who both were well-developed characters throughout the story. There are so many different things going on in this story which makes it realistic as there are always a million things going on at once in families. I loved the roles of the various family members and how they all fit into the story and that they all work together at the deli, I loved the parts of the story that took place at the deli! This is a great, humor filled romance, highly recommended!

Book Review - "Falls Like Lightning"

"Falls Like Lightning" is the first Shawn Grady novel that I have read and it will not be the last! This is a well-written story filled with action and love. Silas and Ellie have a past and suddenly after years apart they are thrown together on the job as Silas is a smokejumper and Ellie a pilot. Seeing each other brings back memories and issues from the past and they are both currently dealing with other things in their life as the moment besides the high stress jobs that they are both involved with. In the midst of a huge fire these two realize that they are dealing with more than they both ever imagined and their feelings may have changed.

This is a great story that moves right along and will keep you wanting to read until you the end! Ellie and Silas are very "real" characters struggling with balancing their personal lives and their work. The emotions that they experience are very real as well. The high energy of the job jumps off the pages and you will be hooked on Grady's style of writing!

Max Lucado's Hermie books are becoming a favorite in my house! Lucado's "Thank you, God, for Loving me" is another great addition to our collection! Filled with vibrant illustrations and rhymes this book holds toddlers' attention well! Hermie prays to God thanking God for the blessings in his life and that God loves him. This is a cute, short story illustrating the importance of thanking God for everything that He gives us. My children, 3 and 1 years old, love this collection! The board book shape and build is perfect for them to hold onto and "read" themselves as well!

Book Review - "Deeply Devoted"

I have read and enjoyed Maggie Brendan's Heart of the West series, so when I heard about her new series, The Blue Willow Brides I was excited! "Deeply Devoted," book 1 in Brendan's Blue Willow Brides series is an excellent historical romance novel!
Catharine, a woman of society in Holland, responded to a mail order bride ad placed by Peter, a wheat farmer in Wyoming and they corresponded by letter back and forth over a few months before Catharine arrives in Wyoming to meet her groom. However, Catharine left out a few details in the letters. Peter is shocked when Catharine's two younger sisters have arrived as well and plan to live with the newlyweds. Throw in siblings, a disgruntled mother-in-law and a lady who seems to have had her heart set on Peter and you have a rocky start to a marriage! Catharine is still hiding something that she cannot bring herself to tell Peter, but yet it is keeping her from being completely comfortable with him and gives her nightmares. Just as she feels ready to tell him, someone else has done some digging into her past and makes matters worse.

I really enjoyed this story and the characters! Peter and Catharine are blessed to have such good friends, the Cristini's, in their lives. The role and significance of the blue willow set is a great addition and shows love and the beauty of forgiveness. This book was a quick read as I did not want to put it down once I started. I wanted to know the hidden secrets just as much as the characters who were seeking the truth as well! I am looking forward to the next book in this series!

Amy Parker's "Night Night Blessings" is a cute story for your young child that shares the idea of thanking God for all of the blessings in your child's life. Written in rhyme, this story is sure to be a favorite bedtime story! Marijan Ramljak's illustrations are adorable and my daughter loves the details in the pictures as she points out various objects in the pictures. They are very soothing and yet have so much detail. The book is a board book with a padded cover making it perfect for little hands to hold on to as well! A great addition to your child's library!

Julie Lessman's second book in her Winds of Change series is here! "A Heart Revealed" tells the story of Emma Malloy who is trying to recover from emotional and physical wounds in Boston. Emma left Dublin to escape the abuse she was receiving from her husband; however the trauma and effects of the abuse was not left in Dublin as she tries to begin a new life. Spending time with her best friend Charity and Charity's family that keeps on growing, Emma finds herself healing and reading to move on. Charity's brother Sean catches Emma's attention and soon her heart as well. However, Emma's past and the emotional baggage that is still so ever present keeps on getting in the way.

This novel is set in 1931 yet the couples are dealing with the same struggles and issues that couples deal with today - balancing work and family, trust in a marriage, money, true love. This is a great novel that will pull you into the lives of the O'Connor siblings as you go through everyday life with them and watch the romance between Emma and Sean unfold!

Book Review - "A Lancaster County Christmas"

I just love everything Christmas - the beauty of the snow, the family times and celebrations during the season, movies, music and books! Suzanne Woods Fisher's latest book, "A Lancaster County Christmas" is truly "Christmas" - the cover is a beautiful wintry scene and the story depicts two very different lifestyles and yet she is able to so vividly share this wonderful time of year and what it means to very different people.

Mattie and Sol are a loving Amish couple trying to raise their son the right way and keep him from harm, trying to keep a cousin on the straight path and hoping to have another child. Jaime and C.J. are busy individuals seeking to find happiness in such a busy, me-oriented world and are struggling to deal with changes in their lives. Jaime and C.J. find themselves snowed in at the Amish home of Mattie and Sol for Christmas and no one will be the same after celebrating this holiday together.

This is a quick read and yet there is so much in this novella! The descriptions are so vivid that while reading I felt as if I were on this farm. The characters are so real and the emotions are tangible as each character is struggling with his or her own issues in their lives. I love that some of the characters are back from her previous novel, "The Choice!" This book is a great addition to my Christmas collection!

Book Review - "The Queen"

Steven James brings FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers to life once again in his thriller, "The Queen." This is the fifth book in this series and I highly recommend starting with book 1 and reading in order as there are some of the same characters in each book.
Patrick is in Wisconsin to investigate the deaths of a mother and her young daughter. The husband and father is missing, and the police assume he is the guilty party. However, it is not that simple and there are many things and people that Patrick will encounter and uncover during his stay in this cold state. Some things date back to years earlier and Patrick finds himself in the midst of more than he bargained for.
I find the relationships between the characters fascinating. With each book, the reader gets to learn more and more about the characters and the dynamics between the characters are interesting to read about and see the changes between them occur. Just a side note....this book is written with vivid descriptions of crime scenes and violence.

I have always been a huge fan of Max Lucado, especially his children's books and now my daughter is becoming one too! Ever since reading "Hermie, a common caterpillar" for the first time, she has been talking about Hermie praying and Hermie becoming a beautiful butterfly!

Hermie feels like there is nothing special about him, but God keeps on telling him that he is not done with him yet. This is a great story/lesson for both children and adults as God is not done with us and he is constantly working on us! Adorable illustrations and a great story that children will enjoy reading over and over again!

Book Review - "Deadly Pursuit"

I just wanted to keep on reading page after page until I finished Irene Hannon's latest novel! "Deadly Pursuit" book 2 in the Guardians of Justice series is a page-turner and a great addition to the series. Book 1 focused on Jake Taylor and book 2 focuses on another Taylor sibling, Alison. Alison is a social worker and she puts so much time and effort into keeping children safe and helping parents make changes in their own lives in order to be able to provide a safe home for their children. However, Alison finds out that not everyone appreciates her help. Alison is introduced to a new police-detective, Mitch, who works with the third Taylor sibling, Cole. Pretty soon Alison and Mitch are spending a lot of time together not only on a personal level, but also a professional level as Alison begins to receive threats.

I have really enjoyed Hannon's novels that I have read and I was not disappointed at all with this one! Hannon has spent time researching the social work profession and this is obvious from her work making this book very realistic. Nicole and her son are great minor characters in the story and great examples of a family who was split up and then able to be reunited as a result of Nicole reassessing her priorities and making necessary changes in her life. There is a great mix of suspense, romance and relationships. I am looking forward to reading the third book in this series and spending more time with the Taylor siblings!

Book Review - Grace for the Good Girl"

Do any of you hide who you really are from the rest of the world? Does being someone else get tiring after awhile? Do you instantly feel relief when you are able to be yourself at the end of each day when you are no longer interacting with others? Emily P. Freeman discusses all of these questions in her book, "Grace for the Good Girl." Freeman's book is great to read alone or to use in a small group. There is a small group leader's guide included in the back of the book.

Near the beginning of her book, Freeman compares how so many of us live our lives - hiding ourselves from the world as if we are wearing a mask. She shares a story of wearing a Barbie mask while she was little, it was fun, but after awhile it grew old and she was relieved to take it off, breathe fresh air and able to be herself. We may find relief like that when we step into our homes at the end of the day and feel like we can finally be ourselves instead of hiding behind a front/shell/facade that we maintain around others. There are three sections of the book, the first addressing "the hiding." Tied into this section is the reputation that one may be trying to maintain, following the rules, always showing that everything is fine. The second section focuses on "the finding" and the third section on feeling free from being found. Each of us are able to live loving God and receiving God's love and not constantly hiding behind the "good girl" mask.

I enjoyed reading this book and I would love to go back and read through it taking my time and also even working through it with a small group as great discussions are sure to come from reading this. Freeman includes personal stories through the book and also Biblical references. Overall, the book is well-written and would be a great small group study!

Fall. Autumn. Whichever name you use for this time of year, it is my favorite season. I love the scents of fall, the colors of fall, the feel of fall, the sound of fall. The color of changing leaves, leaves falling and swirling through the air, the sound of walking through leaves on the ground. The crisp feel to the air, wearing sweaters. Sipping on hot apple cider, the aroma of the cider. Picking apples. Picking pumpkins.

I have recently decorated my home for fall. I have looked forward to this time all year! I had new things to decorate with and more space to decorate this year! Late winter/early spring I ordered an accessory collection from Yankee Candle - Cornucopia Crackle. Beautiful. I have had these pieces packed away since then and have just been waiting to get them out. Finally that time arrived. I have an Autumn Wreath jar candle with this shade and plate, that is a favorite Yankee Candle scent of mine.

This piece is my favorite of the collection. I have one on each end of the mantle above the fireplace and two placed on the dining room table, there are just beautiful.

I also "discovered" two new favorite scents this year at Yankee Candle. I love the apple scents - Apple Cider, Apple Pie, Macintosh, Granny Smith. But I was in the store and feel in love with two more fall scents - Farmer's Market and Be Thankful. The candles smell just like fall. And the pictures on the candles are so nice too. These two scents are a must to go with my fall decor.

These two scents are being displayed with some of the Scarecrow Hill pieces from Yankee Candle. I have never used a tart warmer before, but I just could not resist this piece of this collection! I have tried it and love it!

As soon as I saw the Nature's Crackle collection this year in the store, I knew I had to get the shade and plate for my mom. It is a perfect portrayal of fall.

Hobby Lobby and Kirkland's have had beautiful fall decor pieces this season and on sale already which makes them even better! My house is ready for fall and all the favorites that come with fall. I am ready to savor each and every moment of fall with my family and friends.

Book Review - "Gabby, God's Little Angel"

Shelia Walsh has begun a new series for children! The first book is "Gabby, God's Little Angel." Portraying the message of Psalm 91:11, "He has put his angels in charge of you. They will watch over you wherever you go," Walsh has captured this message in her story. Gabby is an adorable angel who has a few mishaps of her own and she is to watch over a little girl, Sophie, who is quite a bit like herself. Sophie is a busy little girl who needs a lot of protection as Gabby quickly learns, but Gabby is determined to show Sophie God's love.

This is a really cute story, my daughter loves it. The book is filled with vibrant illustrations that are beautiful! However, it almost seems as if there is too much going on as some of the words in the story are bigger and in color. They take away from the illustrations and are a little distracting.

Book Review - "A Confident Heart"

I think that almost everyone at some point doubts herself and feels like she is worth less than she actually is. Renee Swope's "A Confident Heart" is geared toward correcting and lessening these thoughts and feelings. Swope writes from her heart and is willing to share her insecurities with the readers just as she would a best friend. Therefore, while reading it is almost as if you are sitting there with Swope talking as friends would over a cup of coffee.
So often women believe that they are not good enough or she is not doing enough and it is easy to get sucked into a negative mindset. However, one can pull out of these thoughts and believe and see the best in one's self. This book is a great reminder of God's promises to each of us and that we are not alone in the world and with our insecurities. This book is a great book for all women to read and one to go back to during times of doubt.

Book Review - "Playing Hurt"

Any guys out there wanting to read a book that is specifically geared for males? I have one for you! "Playing Hurt: a guy's strategy for a winning marriage" by Brian Goins is one to read! Filled with sports analogies and stories, Goins knows how to relate with other males and say the right things to hook them into the book and keep them reading! Marriage is such an intimate relationship with a person you love and care about deeply; however it is a relationship that can also be hurtful and create deep wounds leading to several giving up on the marriage. Goins is pushing for men to stay strong and work through the hurt and stay in the marriage and come out winning just as a hurt athlete would try to do. While my husband has not had a chance to read the entire book, he did enjoy the part that he has read and was immediately pulled into the book and willing to give it a chance when Goins started with replays from different sporting events, as this is his "language." Goins has included thought-provoking questions and he is very straight-forward in his approach and writing making this a winner!

Suzanne Woods Fisher has complied lessons and story to help readers learn from a group of people leading a simple, yet fulfilling life in her book, "Amish Values for Your Family." Each chapter is a short story containing a lesson that highlights a value of the Amish, for example, spending time with your children, building something instead of buying it for the benefits of teaching your child while working on the project and what activities are we investing our time in and what are we wasting our time with. These are following with a road map section which consists of a few paragraphs providing pointers as to how to get from where you are currently at to where you want to be. There are also quotes shared in here directly from various members of Amish communities.

I found this book to be very interesting! I loved reading the various stories and lessons and I have always been fascinated by the Amish culture. Fisher's work really will help readers to be able to weave bits and pieces of the Amish culture in their English lives without going Amish! One lesson that I appreciated was the fact that time is so precious and to really make time for my kids and spend time interacting with them. Spending time together reading a story, making cookies together, taking a walk all result in spending quality time together, creating memories that will never be forgotten and being able to be a positive role model for them. I encourage readers to read this book as it will make you reconsider areas of your life.

Book Review - "Blue Skies Tomorrow"

I have been a fan of Sarah Sundin ever since I first started her first book in the Wings of Glory series and her latest novel, "Blue Skies Tomorrow," the third book in the Wings of Glory series is her best yet! Set during World War II, "Blue Skies Tomorrow" focuses on Raymond Novak, but his 2 brothers, the main characters in her previous two books play prominent roles as well.

Raymond wants to be a preacher just like his father, yet he feels pressured to do something and be a hero during the war instead of just taking the "safe route." Helen Carlisle who has lost her husband in the war is facing her own challenges with putting on a front to the townspeople as her heart really is not grieving for her husband as everyone would expect her to. However, no one knows Helen's secret and what her life was really like with her husband, that is no one knows until she begins to open her heart to Raymond. Separately and together Raymond and Helen are dealing with struggles in their own hearts and lives. Raymond is transferred within the military and placed in imminent danger and Helen finds herself in danger at home and also at work. Together and with the help of Raymond's family these two find happiness and peace in all areas of their lives.

This book is well-written and a great account of life during World War II. I love how Sundin builds upon the previous 2 stories involving the Novak boys and I felt like I got to know the whole family so much better and not just the main characters. Helen and Raymond are both characters who the readers can easily identify and empathize with. The home issues that Helen deals with are unfortuately very real for many people today. I liked that the details and situation were not glossed over, but dealt with highlighting Helen's emotions and strength and relying on others for help and guidance as well. The book concluded nicely as well as it tied up the stories of all three Novak boys nicely. I have enjoyed this series and look forward to other series hopefully from Sundin!

Book Review - "100 Read & Sing Devotions"

I just received a copy of "100 Read & Sing Devotions" created by Stephen Elkins in the mail today and already have listened to the 2 included cds with my children and read many of the devotions! Tim O'Connor's illustrations are beautiful and really caught the attention of my three year-old! Each devotion is short enough to keep a young child's attention, and gets across a clear, strong message in a small amount of words. There is a song that corresponds with the devotions to reinforce the Biblical truth as well. There is a nice variety as well as there is a devotion focusing on The Lord's Prayer, one on being trained to be a child of God to one about Noah's ark and Samson's strength. This is a great addition for any young child's library and would make a beautiful gift!

Book Review - "Abe's Lucky Day"

"Abe's Lucky Day" written by Jill Warren is a valuable, new resource to be used with children! Abe is a homeless man who has very little, and yet he sees others who need help more than he does. For example, Abe has a box and he is going to sleep in it, but he sees a little girl and gives it to her for her to sleep in. Then suddenly Abe is noticed by a man and he is offered a home and a job making this his lucky day!

This is a cute story that is written so that children can enjoy it, but also learn from it. It is a great way to teach children to think about others and try to help those in need. It would have been so easy for Abe to keep each of the things he gave away for himself as he was in need as well, but he did not, he put others first. The illustrations are beautiful and my children love looking at them and telling the story by looking at the pictures. This is a great lesson that can be taught through reading this book and I will read it several times with my own children, but also use it with the children I work with. I highly recommend this for parents and anyone working with children.

Book Review - "The Colonel's Lady"

Taking place in Kentucky during the 1770's you are in for a historical experience while reading Laura Frantz's "The Colonel's Lady." The frontier is a wild and dangerous place, and it becomes even more wild and dangerous when Roxanna arrives and learns that her father has been killed. Unable to afford to leave, Roxanna takes over her father's position working for the Colonel. However, this is just not a Colonel, this is a man who promised Roxanna's father that he would watch out for her; however the chemistry that is between them is stronger than that. Roxanna has suffered through the deaths of her parents and having her fiancee leave her for another woman and she is hesitant around the Colonel as she has heard that he has a lady back in Ireland. Will Roxanna and her heart be safe and will she trust God?

This is the third book that I have read by Laura Frantz and I think this is my favorite out of the three! The characters are so real and well-developed and full of emotion! Frantz does a wonderful job at describing the frontier and creating vivid images transporting the reader back in time. This story is filled with romance, intrigue and struggles that we still deal with today creating a wonderful read!

Brennan Manning and John Blase have created an adorable story that discusses God's love for His children in "Smack Dab in the Middle of God's Love." The main characters do not have children of their own yet they always have children in their home and share their love with others. God's love is portrayed through this wonderful couple. I love the Mexican heritage that is alive in this book as this is an eye opener for my children and is a great discussion starter. The illustrations are beautiful and add a lot to the story.

Kim Cash Tate has written a great follow up novel to her novel "Faithful." "Cherished" continues on with the story of 3 main characters and ties in characters from her previous novel. Tate dives right into the story and quickly draws the reader into the story by beginning with a beautiful and moving event - a wedding and a emotional moment for Kelli as she is sharing a song that she wrote during a significant time in her life. Kelli and Heather, although very different individuals, become close friends and are really seeking the same thing - unconditional love and finding their own true worth.

Everyone wants to be loved and cherished just as Kelli and Heather. This is such a great woman's fiction book as each and every woman can relate to their personal and relational struggles. This book is well-written and Tate's style of writing is easy and enjoyable to read, making this a quick read, but also a book that pulls the reader in quickly and really make the reader reflect on her own life.

Book Review - "The Harvest of Grace"

Cindy Woodsmall's "The Harvest of Grace" is the third book in her Ada's House series. This is a great story and different from a "typical" Amish novel, but very enjoyable to read.

Sylvia would rather tend to the animals and work on the dairy farm than be married and have babies. Sylvia has had her heart broken though and it is easier to focus on the animals than love. Aaron has been away at rehab, but he returns to help his parents and their farm that is not doing well. However, there is something else there taking over and Sylvia is not one to give in easily. Aaron and Sylvia have their differences, yet also their similarities. Learning to forgive, forget and still have hope and believe in love are lessons throughout this story.

I like the fact that Woodmall included a summary of what had happened in the first two novels in this series as it was a great reminder of the story so that I was "caught up" as to where the story was at. Also, the character list is a great addition as it is often difficult to keep the many characters straight as to who is who and how they are connected with one another. Many of the characters struggle with things the same any "Englisher" would and I think that added more appeal to the story. This is a great read and I would recommend all three books in the series.

Book Review - "Birds Can Fly and So Can I"

Noa Nimrodi's book, "Birds Can Fly and So Can I" is an adorable book with vivid, beautiful illustrations and a great message for children to pursue their dreams and discover new talents.

Giraffe sees some birds flying one day and wishes she could fly as well. In a dream Giraffe flies and spends time with friends and discovers that her long neck can be helpful. When she wakes up it was all a dream, but the pleasant memories are still there and she feels better about herself.

This is a cute rhyming story for children. Children always need to be encouraged to try new things, uncover hidden talents and reach for higher goals. This is a great way to portray these messages to children. This book is a great resource to use with children and I would recommend this book for any counselor working with elementary-aged children. The book ends with a page with a picture of Giraffe with spaces to be filled in by the reader. For example, one spot says "I dream of..." and another is "I will try..." The very last page reads, "Living your dreams is tough to do But Giraffe did it, and so can you Look to the sky, there is no end Burst through the clouds as you ascend." Great message and resource to use with children!

This is a simple, straightforward story about two children who spend the day with their grandad. It is a story celebrating time spent with him and the different things they do together. There is a page at the end of the book for the reader to illustrate a picture of his or her own grandad which is a nice touch to the book.

Although the story is very short and simple, it is a nice reminder of spending time with loved ones. This book can be a great discussion starter for children to remember and talk about "adventures" with their own grandparents or other loved ones.

Book Review - "Lily Hates Goodbyes"

Jerilyn Marler's children's book, "Lily Hates Goodbyes," is a must have for children with a parent in the military and also for elementary school counselors.

Lily's father is in the military and is gone for days. Lily struggles with this and is angry and sad. Lily's feelings are validated by her mother and her mother helps her to cope with her feelings in appropriate ways.

This book is a cute story that is beautifully illustrated that children will love to read. The coping mechanisms that Lily and her mother utilize in the story could be used by the reader or could be great talking points to try and come with coping mechanisms that may work better for the reader. I like how Lily experiences different emotions throughout the story as this can help the reader to identify feelings that he or she may be experiencing and realize that it is not wrong or unusual to be experiencing these feelings.

Looking for a way to talk to your child about empathy and compassion? Rocky Shepheard's book, "A New Name for Worthless: A Hero is Born" is a story that will help you do just that!

Worthless is a dog who slept through a break-in, so his master has him chained outside. Wishing that his master were his best friend, Worthless feels sad about this, but his best friends Sly Fox and Otto spend time with him and are truly the best friends that he could ever wish for. Wanting a better life for their friend, Sly Fox and Otto help him to find a new life and become known as something other than "Worthless."

This is a well-written children's book with beautiful illustrations. It is easy to read and understand and written so that it will be enjoyed by children. The story is told from the dog's point of view making it even more enjoyable for children to read. This will help children think about others and having compassion for others.

Book Review - "Treasuring Emma"

Kathleen Fuller's latest Amish series begins with "Treasuring Emma." Emma has dealt with and is dealing with a lot of loss in her life. Both of Emma's parents have passed away and her heart has been broken when Adam left years earlier to live as an Englisher. When Adam receives word that his mother is not doing well he moves back to the family farm next to Emma. However, there is a cousin of Emma's brother-in-law who is in the area and Emma's sister is pushing the two of them together. Emma must follow her heart and conscience and put God first; however this is easier said than done.

Although the Amish live different lives than the English they are still human and deal with some of the same issues and struggles in their lives. Emma does not feel that good about her physical appearance, Emma's sister and brother-in-law have a struggling marriage and some people are not who they first appear to be. This book is well-written and a quick read. The characters are well-developed and seem real making this a great start to the series and I am looking forward to the next book!

Book Review - "Bound by Guilt"

I was hooked on the very first page of C.J. Darlington's "Bound by Guilt!" A new author to me and one that I am sure to read books by again!

Roxi is living with her aunt and cousin and trying to make her aunt Irene happy, Roxi participates in stealing rare and antique books from bookshops. This is not something Roxi feels right about doing, but Irene took Roxi in when her own mother could not care for her and she is better than living in foster homes. One night, Irene's plan does not go as planned and Roxi cannot live like this any longer, a man is dead and she cannot get the image of him dying out of her mind. Abby is suspended from her job as a police officer when she receives the call from her dad that her brother has been shot, presumably a result of a robbery gone bad. Abby and Roxi's lives will intersect and neither one will be the same as they forgive, find forgiveness, and find unconditional love.

Darlington has created a wonderful story! I have found her first novel, "Thicker Than Blood" and cannot wait to go back and read it and learn more about Christy. The characters are all so wonderfully created and ones that the reader will empathize with throughout the tears, joy and growth. Unfortunately, there are many hurting teenagers in the world just like Roxi, and also not enough adults like Keith and Jan. I would love to read another book that picks up where this novel left off as there are so much more that could be shared about Diego, Roxi, Abby and Christy as there lives were all at crossroads at the end of this book. I highly recommend this novel and author!

Book Review - "The Blessed"

The fourth book in Ann H. Gabhart's Shaker series "The Blessed" tells the story of Lacey, a 16 year-old girl who has not had an easy life at all and it continues to be tough and confusing.

Lacey's father chose her step-mother over her and Lacey was taken in by a pastor's wife, Miss Mona. However, when Miss Mona passes away the only thing to do it seems is to marry Preacher Palmer. At 16 years of age, Lacey is still finding her place in the world and when they suddenly move to a Shaker community, Lacey finds her world being turned over. Marriage is not allowed in this community, however Lacey is already technically married and yet she has also fallen for a young man in the community. Is this really the place for Lacey to be?

Gabhart ties in so many details into the story in regards to the Shaker community. It is obvious that she has done much research about this sect. The characters are easy to love or easy to hate as the reader will quickly form opinions while reading and rooting for Lacey along the way! This book is full of historical detail, love, hurt and finding one's way in the world.
This is a fourth book in the series, but could be read as a stand-alone novel as well.

Bob Waliszewski's latest book, "Plugged-In Parenting" is a book that is a valuable resource and also one that will challenge you as a parent. Split into three sections, the first section making you think and decide where you stand as a parent in the midst of all of the media that is constantly bombarding us. The second section focuses on making rules, but making rules in a way that will not create enemies and the third section maintaining it and sharing with others.

This book is filled with research, scripture references, personal stories and questions and answers. The media is constantly changing and yet it is also always bombarding us, children included and as parents we want to be aware what our children are being exposed to and taking into their minds. The goal of this book is to help connect with your children in regards to the media, find a place where you both are happy with the limitations and allowances and how to better handle conflicts. This is a good resource that I would recommend to parents.

Jenny B. Jones has created a character that teenage girls are sure to connect with and enjoy reading about! "In Between" Act 1 in Jones' A Katie Parker Production is the first book in this series and teenagers and adults alike will get hooked on this series and want to read more!

We first meet Katie when she is being transported to a foster home by a girls' home director. Katie has just gotten settled into the group home and then she found out she was being shipped off to a foster home in In Between, Texas to live with James and Millie Scott. Katie's mother is in prison and her father is not involved, so Katie has learned to fend for herself, yet she finds herself adjusting to her "pretend" family and learning what unconditional love is, from both her foster parents and God when she finds herself getting into some trouble.

Jones' book is filled with characters that are humorous, heart-wrenching and so real. Written from Katie's perspective, this book is sure to be a winner with teenage girls. Katie may be experiencing a different life than many, but yet she still struggles with some of the same issues on top of having to live in a foster home and dealing with not being with her biological parents. This is a great start to the series and is highly recommended!

Mona Hodgson's second book in The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek, "Too Rich for a Bride," is a great historical fiction novel that you will not want to miss out on reading!

Ida has moved to Cripple Creek to prove to herself and others that women can make it in the business world and it can be done without making promises to men. Two of Ida's sisters already live there and so Ida is thrilled to be near them. However, her sisters and brothers-in-law have reservations about Mollie O'Bryan, Ida's employer. Mollie and Ida are very successful in what they do, but is it wrong how they gain their information in regards to what stocks to invest in? Ida has no room in her life for men, but yet she seems to continually have contact with a very successful lawyer, Colin, and Tucker, a traveling preacher who is in back in town to run his ailing father's business. Both men have secrets, yet which will harm Ida and who does she lose her heart to?

Hodgson has a style of writing that is very easy to follow and it pulls the reader right into the story through the vivid images and descriptions. The characters are lovable and real. I have not read the first book, but I am going to find it and read about Nell and Kat. There are family dynamics throughout this book, along with romance, heartache, healing, and growth - everything that makes for a great read! Be sure this is on your summer reading list!

Book Review - "Martha"

Martha is known for being the sister who was too busy when Jesus was at her home to sit and listen to Him as she was cooking. However, there is so much more to her story! Diana Wallis Taylor shares a beautiful story in her novel, "Martha" that will open the reader's eyes and give a new perspective on who Martha really was.

Martha has had to run her household and bear a great amount of responsibility since her mother had passed away. Taking care of the house and cooking for her father, brother and sister took all of her time and she was not as carefree as others her age or does she see herself as marriage material. Martha and her siblings, Lazarus and Mary have the honor of meeting Jesus and His disciples and also hosting them in their home. Martha learns a great deal and also is told by Jesus that there is someone out there for her.

Martha, Mary and Lazarus come to live in this book and are well-developed characters. It is so great to experience meeting Jesus and His disciples along with them and also being on the journey of coming to believe. Taylor ties in a lot of details and descriptions creating vivid scenes so that it seems as if the reader is right there going to the temple and working in the home. There is romance thrown in as well as each of the three siblings fall in love and yet things do not always turn out as planned and/or hoped, but each learns to seek God. I highly recommend this book!

Book Review - "Goodbye, Hollywood Nobody"

Many have followed Scotty's life and journey through Lisa Samson's Hollywood Nobody Series. Scotty's saga comes to a close in "Goodbye, Hollywood Nobody." Scotty and her father are traveling in search of Scotty's mother and Scotty is searching for answers to her questions in regards to God and faith. Charley is off in Scotland with a new boyfriend and Karissa shows up forcing Scotty to deal with her feelings toward her and move closer to forgiveness.

This is a great teen series as Scotty deal with real issues and the books are written from her perspective. Scotty is an enjoyable character to read about, and journey with as the reader will connect with Scotty through her various experiences and will empathize with her. It has been enjoyable to read about Scotty and see how she has grown from the first book to the last book. I recommend this series for teen girls!

Book Review - "My Foolish Heart"

Susan May Warren's latest novel, "My Foolish Heart," is book #4 in her Deep Haven series. I have not yet read the other 3 books in the series (I need to!), and I did not feel lost or "out of the loop" while reading this book, so do not think you cannot read this book if you have not read the others!

Isadora (Issy) lives in her own little world - specifically her home and yard, as she is fearful of having a panic attack in front of the town again. Issy's best friend Lucy keeps her connected to the town and Issy connect with others through her talk radio show "My Foolish Heart;" however no one knows she is the host. Caleb moves in next door to Issy and their paths cross and yet they are both keeping secrets so neither really knows the other person. Caleb is trying to become the head football coach for the high school as the longtime coach, Issy's father, has been unable to coach since the accident, yet Caleb has some limitations of his own including missing part of a leg. Caleb calls into "My Foolish Heart" on a whim as he is trying to get on better terms with his neighbor and Issy shares advice not knowing that she is the one who is the focus of the coversation!

This is a great book and I highly recommend it! Warren's town of Deep Haven is a cute, touristy town, but yet has the small, hometown feel as well. The characters are so lovable and ones that the reader will want to spend more time with! I am for sure going to now go and read books 1-3 to learn more about the minor characters in this book! Issy, Caleb, Lucy and Seb are all dealing with individual issues in their lives and they each must work through them and through this they become closer to God, with each other and who they each would like to be as a person. The role the dog plays is sweet and significant as he provides companionship, comfort and plays a role in bringing two people together and also helping them find healing in their own lives. This is a fun, encouraging and touching read that will have you drawn into the lives of Deep Haven residents in the first chapter!

So often another person's life is so enticing and you wish to be that person and have his or her life. This is what two girls from completely different worlds think until they get to chance to switch places in Melody Carlson's new youth adult fiction novel, "Double Take."

Madison Van Buren, from one of the wealthiest families, is fed up with her life and being pulled in all directions. It is her spring break and she just heads out leaving New York City and ends up in Amish country. While at a diner she meets up with an Amish girl her age and who could pass as her twin. Anna, the Amish girl, is waiting for her uncle to pick her up to take to their home to help her pregnant aunt. The two girls switch clothes and identities and decide to meet and switch back in a week. Anna arrives at Madison's penthouse and begins a search for former Amish beau who had left for the city about a year ago and Madison is thrust into having to care for children and an Amish household. Neither girl is truly prepared for all of the experiences and soon realize there are aspects of their lives that they miss.

This is a fun book to read! It is a great illustration of being grateful for who you are and your life and that things may not always be greener on the other side. I enjoyed reading about the girls' experiences during their switch and experiencing along with them the changes and growth they each made. The relationship that Madison makes with Aunt Rachel is great and beneficial for both of them as is Anna's friendship with Lucinda. It is a great story of looking beyond the surface and appreciating life. I highly recommend this book for young adults and older adults as well!

"The Thirteenth Gift" is a beautifully written story by Charlene Costanzo. Claire, a traveling journalist, witnesses and reports on the hurting, abused and living in poverty children throughout the world. Claire meets an elderly woman, Baba, and a fable is shared about "gifts" that were brought from twelve godmothers for a king and queen daughters. These gifts are not traditional gifts as they include beauty, wisdom and imagination just to name a few. As Claire learns of these gifts she also learns to appreciate them and apply them to her own life, thus making changes in her own life. This is a well-written story that will make the reader think about his or her own life and any changes that should be made. This is a quick read, yet one that is thought-provoking as well.

Book Review - "The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck"

Kathleen Y'Barbo's 40th book, "The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck," is sure to delight readers! Charlotte is bucking the treand and normal societal expectations for young women in the 1880's as she wishes to remain single, go to college, earn a degree and work with her father in their family company. However, her father is not in agreement with that and would like to see her in a nice marriage. Charlotte's father meets Alex, an astronomer and formulates a plan that will solve all of their problems, Alex's family name will be saved, Charlotte will be able to attend college and Charlotte and Alex will be married. Charlotte and Alex are not in total agreement with this as they plan to have the marriage annulled, but suddenly this does not become the plan.

Y'Barbo has created a fun read! Charlotte's stubbornness and her spirit come alive on the pages and she is a loveable character that you will enjoy getting to know and reading about! The character's interactions are humorous and yet touching at times as well and the characters will have you drawn into their lives and keep you there from the beginning of the story to the end. A great, fun read for this summer!

Book Review - "To Win Her Heart"

"To Win Her Heart" by Karen Witemeyer is a great historical fiction read! This is Witemeyer's third novel, yet it is the first one that I had read, but it will not be the last!

Eden Spencer has resigned herself to being a spinster as the man she was engaged to did not really love her, instead he loved her father's money. Eden moved to Spencer, Texas, the town founded by her father and lives in her parents' home. Eden fills her time with operating a library out of the home and leading a story hour for the children. Eden meets Levi Grant, the town's new blacksmith and is puzzled and intrigued by the hours he spends reading at the library. Eden cannot believe that this man is a fan of books and enjoys the stories as she does. Eden and Levi begin corresponding through letters and through Levi's actions - not fighting when provoked, rescuing a kitchen girl from the local saloon and bringing her to live with Eden - Eden finds herself falling in love. However, she is not prepared when she learns of Levi's past.

I really enjoyed this story! Witemeyer created lovable characters. Chloe plays a wonderful role in the story and Eden's parents, although they are not a huge part of the story, play vital roles as well. The descriptions and imagery throughout the book are so vivid and well-written. Eden's hobby of pressing wildflowers and making wall hangings with them was fun to read about.

Eva Marie Everson has started a Cedar Key series, the first book being "Chasing Sunsets." A great summery read that will transport you to a Florida beach!

Kimberly does not know what she did to have her husband divorce her, but he did and now he has 5 weeks of visitation with their 2 sons this summer. Kimberly's father sends her to the family beach house to find a new housekeeper, however Kimberly finds healing, a past love, a new friend, and truths that have been covered. As soon as Kimberly enters Cedar Key she can feel some of the tension leave her and she is transported back in time to when she was young and carefree and vacationing with her father. Kimberly meets up with Steven, a local boy who she lost her heart to in high school and also had her heart broken by. Following her heart instead of her head, Kimberly agrees to go out with him and they share about their lives since that summer years ago and discover that there may still be love between them.

This is a beautiful story of second chances and relationships of all kinds. I love how Everson ties in flashbacks and memories throughout the story as it allows the reader to relive these moments along with the characters. Kimberly is dealing with a lot at this time as she is still coming to terms with her divorce and having her sons away from her, but she is also having to deal with issues from the past such as her mom's drinking problem and current issues in her sisters' lives as well. Kimberly is such a believable character and one the reader will come to love and empathize with. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series, "Seeking Sunrise." There is a sneak peak at the end of "Chasing Sunsets!"

Book Review - "Utopia Texas"

Betty Byrd shares a captivating story, "Utopia Texas," that looks at what people will do to have wealth and status in society.

Brya's position in society is everything to her and she will do whatever to keep her station in life even if it destroys her relationship with other. Brya's relationship with her daughter Olivia has always been rocky and she will go to any lengths to cover up the "mistakes" that Olivia makes, no matter the cost. Brya and Cole, her husband, are part of the elite crowd and part of the oil business in Texas and wherever they go with Olivia, something happens as Olivia seems to cause trouble for them and her friends. This does not end even as Olivia becomes older and Brya finds herself caring for her granddaughter Maggie and helping to rear her as Olivia is "unfit."

The book cover will draw the reader to pick up this story and begin reading - great choice for the cover design! This is an interesting read that really delves into relationships with each other and the facades that people feel they must keep at all times and at any cost. The characters are well-developed and Cherese and Plez are great additions to the story. This is Byrd's second novel, a follow-up to her first, "Trinity's Daughter."

Sally John dives right into the story in her latest novel, "Desert Gift." Marriage expert Jillian Galloway's world is turned upside down when her husband of 24 years tells her he wants a divorce. This announcement is made when she is getting ready to walk out the door to catch a plane to a publicity tour for 5 weeks. Jillian questions herself, her career, everything about her and wonders what she could have done differently. During this difficult time Jillian seeks refuge at her parents' home in the desert and really seeks God during this time and learns more about herself.

If you are looking for a light summer read, this is not it! This book is thought-provoking and will have you thinking about your own life and different twists and turns that may have happened. John has created very real characters and you will empathize, question and grow along with Jillian throughout this book. John's style of writing is easy to get into you and read and you will be hooked on the very first page!

Book Review - "A Vision of Lucy"

"A Vision of Lucy" is Margaret Brownley's third book in her Rocky Creek Romance series. This is a great addition to the series! I really enjoyed the story!

Lucy loves photography and she wishes her father would accept her as a photographer and see her as an artist like he viewed Lucy's mother. However, things do not go smoothly for Lucy, she appears to be accident-prone as things continually happen wherever she is! Lucy meets David, a quiet rustic man and soon discovers that he has secrets. By taking his picture, Lucy believes this will be the key to her acceptance; however things are not always as they seem.

Brownley does a great job at pulling the reader into her story. The characters are very fun and lovable, and could be the people living in your town. The historical aspect and descriptions are vivid and transport back in time to Rocky Creek!

Book Review - "Indelible"

Kristen Heitzmann's latest novel, "Indelible" is a thrilling read that grips you on the very first page and does not let go until you reach the final page. It is filled with romance, suspense, hope and healing.

Natalie Reeves is a sculptor, however she is not a "normal sculptor" as she has a disability that she must cope with by releasing images through her hands into the clay. While moving into a new town with the help of her pro-athlete brother and his family, a horrific incident occurs and this results in Natalie meeting Trevor who rescues her nephew. Trevor, former Olympic skiing, owns an outfitter shop and is part of a search and rescue team as this helps him to work through things from his past. Natalie and Trevor's lives become intertwined and they find themselves dealing with someone who worships Trevor, but is also harming innocent lives around them.

I really enjoyed this book; however I did not realize that this book is part of a series until I was partway through. I felt like I was missing bits and pieces through the story as other characters and past incidents were referred to. I searched on the Internet and found that Heitzmann's novel, "Indivisible" comes ahead of this one and I am now going to read that. I do wish I had read it first, but the story is great either way. The characters are well-developed in this novel and there is a small town community feel while reading about their lives. I hope this town and these characters are a part of future novels from Heitzmann.

"Money Secrets of the Amish" by Lorilee Craker is a fascinating read! The Amish live so simply and are often looked upon as living in the past or in a world so different than ours; however they are living in today's society and are still managing to survive, thrive and save money!
The stories that are shared in this book are about real people who are living in today's society and making choices that result in having plenty to live on and also managing to save for the future as well. There are many tips that can be applied to an "English" life and many things to think about. It will encourage each reader to think about where money is being spent and how to live more carefully. This is a great read for today!

Beverly Lewis has complied a collection of "Amish Prayers" in a beautiful hardcover book. The Amish are a fascinating group of people who live simply and have such a strong faith, although it does vary from other cultures and denominations. However, their love and awe of God is evident in their prayers that are very heartfelt and full of meaning.

Lewis' collection contains prayers of different types and are organized in different chapters. For example, there is a chapter of "prayers for a new day," "prayers of gratitude" and "prayers for strength" just to name a few. This book would make a great devotional or prayer guide as the reader can easily find a type of prayer that fits the need or mindset at a time. A beautiful collection to add to anyone's library!

Lorna Seilstad's latest novel, "A Great Catch," book 2 in her Lake Manawa Summers series will put you right in the mood for summer and have you longing for time to lounge at the beach or a summer home and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Emily Graham is the president of the local women suffrage club and although it is summer she is not slowing down her efforts to help women gain the right to vote. Emily is spending the summer with her grandmother and her two great-aunts whose goal seems to be to find a man for Emily. Emily is not seeking for one herself, but she crashes into Carter Stockton, a pitcher for the local baseball team. Emily soon finds herself spending a great deal of time with Carter and must learn to seek God and not push Him aside to focus on everything else in her life.

This is a great second book to the series. Set in the summer of 1901 in Iowa, you will be transported to a different era and this time period comes alive on the pages of this book! The main character from book 1, Marguerite, is back! She is married to Tripp and they have a little boy. It is great to read about some of the previous novel's characters and to learn more about Emily in this book. Seilstad creates great characters and they are very realistic and are dealing with family and relationship issues, dealing with their own pride and also political issues that were prominent during this time. The historical details add a lot to the story. I enjoyed reading about the Bloomer Girls' visit to the lake and this event. I highly recommend this book to anyone enjoying historical fiction - it is a perfect summery read!

Book Review - "A Killer Among Us"

A fan of Lynette Eason's first 2 books in her Women of Justice series, I was excited to read her newest book, book 3 "A Killer Among Us." Readers were introduced to Kit Kenyon, Jamie and Samantha's sister who has been raised by different parents, at the end of book 2 and now Kit returns as the main character in book 3. Kit is a hostage negotiator and finds herself in the midst of a new crime involving a serial killer targeting law students until she finds herself wanted by the killer and being held hostage herself. Kit finds herself attracted to her new partner Noah and is trying to adjust to her family she grew up not knowing she had.

Eason's beloved characters return from the first two books and the readers are introduced to new ones as well. This story held my attention and I wanted to read and read until I reached the end as I had to find out all the facts. The many twists and turns will keep you guessing and keeping you turning the pages. The characters and story are so real, they could be your next door neighbors. A must read for romantic suspense fiction readers!

Joan Wolf has created a fictionalized account of Esther in her novel, "A Reluctant Queen." While Wolf adds to and shares her own take on the story of Esther, the Biblical principles and truth are evident throughout the story.

Esther is a young, simple girl; however her heart grabs the attention of King Xerxes and forever history is changed and loves grows between these two individuals.

Wolf has expanded upon this Biblical account and this is really a beautiful love story to read. The characters come alive on the pages and the reader will gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of a story that may not be as well known as some Biblical accounts. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who enjoy historical fiction.

Dorothy Love's debut novel, "Beyond All Measure," is sure to be a popular read among historical fiction readers! Set in the post civil war era, Love does an excellent job at incorporating this time period into her story.

Ada has no one left in her life - her parents, her aunt, her fiancee, her friends - they are all either deceased or have deserted her. Answering an ad in the newspaper for being a companion to an older lady, Ada travels from Boston to Hickory Ridge, Tennessee with what little money and belongings she has left. When Ada arrives she is met with one surprise after another, and she quickly questions her decision. Being a Yankee, Ada is met with hatred and some wariness by some people as she is merely judged based upon where she is from. Ada finds herself in the midst of tension and disagreements among the townspeople, but yet she finds herself fitting in with Lillian, the lady she is caring for, and Lillian's nephew, Wyatt, who is her employer among a few others. Ada's plan is to establish a millinery shop and carry on creating hats in memory of her mother; however she is met with mixed responses as to this as well.

Ada is struggling to create a new life for herself, but she must deal with some unresolved issues from her past as well. This is a great story that will encourage readers to work through things from the past and to not be afraid to take risks and move on. The characters are all very realistic and easy to empathize and make a connection with while reading. I am eagerly waiting for more novels from this new author!

Book Review - "A Heart Divided"

I have just read "A Heart Divided," book 1 on Kathleen Morgan's Heart of the Rockies series and I am eagerly waiting for book 2!!! This is the first book of Kathleen Morgan's that I have read and I am going to for sure read the other books that she has written! I was drawn right into the story in the first paragraph, becoming totally captivated and just want to keep reading until I got to the end of the last sentence.

Living in the Colorado Rockies in the late 1800's, Sarah Caldwell is the loyal daughter and sister to her father and her brothers, even when she does not approve of their actions. The Caldwell family has been feuding with the Wainwrights for years, but suddenly Sarah finds herself in the midst of this as she is taken hostage by a Wainwright son, Cord, when he recognizes her as the beautiful girl who distracted him while his home was robbed. Cord Wainwright tried to escape his father's criticism and life all together, but has returned to help out physically and financially on the ranch. Cord realizes that Sarah is not to blame for her father's actions as she cannot control her father anymore than he can try to control his. Cord and Sarah try fighting the growing attraction and love between them, but it seems that love is stronger than the hate between their families.

The characters are wonderful in this book! They are well-developed and you will be drawn into their lives. Morgan's style of writing is easy and enjoyable to read. I am hoping to read more about the characters in this book, not only more about Cord and Sarah, but also Nick, Noah and Danny as well.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance fiction!

These are just a few things about my dad.

Chantel herself has lost a lot of weight, so she shares from personal experience giving this book credibility. Also, the pages are filled with recipes, detailed exercises, facts and encouragement. Chantel encourages the reader to follow the 80/20 plan, meaning you can indulge with 20% of what you eat, as you will be miserable and will most likely fail if you cut out all food that you enjoy eating. Chantel strives to get the reader to realize that food is not to be viewed as a friend or comfort, and God is here to turn to for encouragement. Also, food should not cause anxiety either and you can love food and enjoy eating, and also lose weight and be happy with how you feel and look!

Chantel is passionate about what she writes and her own struggles and triumphs are an encouragement to read. This book is a valuable resource to refer back to and use as an encouragement and a guide. It is as if Chantel is right there across the table encouraging good choices, an active life and a healthier, happier life overall!

Book Review - "The Girl in the Gatehouse"

Influenced by Jane Austen's life and work, Julie Klassen brings to readers her newest novel, "The Girl in the Gatehouse." Mariah Aubrey is banished from her family and home to a relative's gatehouse. While here Mariah writes and publishes novels under the name of "Lady A" for fear of further embarrassing and angering her father. Keeping her past a secret and also her writing, Mariah is guarded with those around her, yet the secrets begin to be revealed through various encounters on the estate's premises. Captain Matthew Bryant is trying to win the approval of a lady's father and this lady's heart, but throughout the process, Bryant realizes he is losing his heart to Mariah, the woman living in the gatehouse on the estate he is renting.

Set in the early 1800's the descriptions are so vivid the reader is transported back to this time and society. Klassen's book is filled with lovable characters such as Mariah and Matthew. However, Dixon and Martin are characters that add so much to the story as do the characters living in the poorhouse and Hart as well. I thought the characters are all well-developed and enjoyable to read about. I also think the quote that is included in the heading of each chapter is a nice touch. I recommend this book to historical fiction readers as it is filled with intrigue, scandal and romance.

Book Review - "Larkspur Cove"

Lisa Wingate's latest novel, "Larkspur Cove," is a story of moving on, forgiveness and hope. Andrea, trying to move on with her life after a divorce from her supposedly upstanding husband, moves into her parents' beach house with her adolescent son as she has no where else to go. Beginning a new job and a new life takes a lot of strength and determination as her life is not at all what is was before. Mart is also beginning a new life in Moses Lake as a game warden and he is trying to move on with his life, yet he harbors guilt over things that have happened in the past. Mart and Andrea find themselves working together to help a little girl and her grandfather; however they begin discovering that they enjoy being with each other and their conversations no longer merely focus on their work. For various reasons they are not ready to take this step, but things become dangerous and they must really listen to their heads and their hearts.

I really enjoyed this book, and I think this is partly due to being able to relate with Andrea as my job is so similar to hers. Andrea as well as the other characters are so real in the story and could truly be the members of a community near to me. Each of the characters are dealing with things in their lives - Andrea and Mart moving on with their lives, Dustin adjusting to having divorced parents and trying to fit with the new peers in his life. Birdie and Len will tug at your heart and make you wish you could just help them. This is a well-written story that is filled with some suspense and romance; it is just an overall good read!

Saundra Dalton-Smith, MD has written a book focusing on lies that women tell themselves, "Set Free to Live Free." Often women tell themselves lies that interfere will living a happy and fulfilling life as these lies cloud their thoughts and will hold her back from following her dreams or taking a step toward something new. It is almost second nature for many women to compare herself with others around them, comparing looks, careers and wishing that she were "perfect" as others may be viewed. Or she may struggle with trying to balance everything in her life and instead of trying something new, she may not even attempt this role as she believes it cannot be done or balanced with everything else. These are just 2 of the "lies" that are addressed in this book. Dalton-Smith's style of writing is very clear and concise and the book is filled with personal accounts and also scripture references.

I enjoyed this book as it is very easy to read and follow as the layout is very simple and straightforward. I felt like the author was speaking directly to me at times and we were having a conversation over cups of coffee. I would recommend this book to all women as it is filled with great lessons and tidbits of wisdom. It is an encouraging book to read!

Book Review - "The Dawn of a Dream"

The third book in Ann Shorey's At Home in Beldon Grove, "The Dawn of a Dream," is my favorite book in the series! I have read and enjoyed all three books, but this third one is the best in my opinion!

Luellen McGarvie is a young girl in the first book in this series when her family moves after her father has passed away. Now Luellen is a young lady and has been married for a month to a man, Brendan O'Connell, when he suddenly tells her he is leaving Beldon Grove to return to Chicago to his wife! Luellen cannot believe how she fell for Brendan's charm and married in haste. Luellen still has a letter that she follows through on - going to school to be a teacher. Luellen decides to follow her dream; however this proves to be more difficult as Brendan left her with more than a broken heart and determination to not fall for a man's charm again.

I really enjoyed this book as it has all the characters from the first two books in the series, but the story is really now focusing on Molly's children. I loved reading about the directions that Luellen, James, Franklin and Lily have all taken with their lives. The new characters, Belle, Dr. Alexander, Mrs. Hawks, Leah and Ward are all well-developed characters and all are great additions as well. Although it is set in the mid 1800's, the message is still applicable to readers today - do not give up on your dreams even if there are some obstacles that may arise.

Book Review - "Transforming Prayer"

Do you ever feel like you are just merely saying the words to say them and say that you prayed? Do you sometimes feel like prayer does nothing? Do you every feel like you're just reading a list in a prayer? If you would answer yes to any of these questions or similar one, then Daniel Henderson's book, "Transforming Prayer" is for you! Henderson explains that prayer, the very concept and act of it, is so familiar to us. However, it is often approached with apathy and not really seen as the experience that it is really is and could be. Prayer is a time of seeking God and spending time sharing what is on our hearts and seeking for guidance and thanking Him.

Henderson's style of writing is very easy to follow and get into. Reading this book is like you are sitting with Henderson discussing prayer and enjoying cups of coffee. Henderson shares stories and information about himself that really add to the book and allow for a great in-depth experience. There are also questions to go along with each chapter for further thought and study. This is a must-read for anyone wanting to have a closer relationship with God, it will truly change your view of prayer!

Book Review - "Hollywood Nobody"

The first book in a series, "Hollywood Nobody," by Lisa Samson seems like a winner for young adult fiction!

Scotty Dawn is a fifteen year-old girl that teenage girls would be able to relate to, not exactly her lifestyle, but who she is. Scotty travels with her mom, Charley from movie set to movie set as her mom's job. While Scotty enjoys her life and her interactions with actors and actresses in Hollywood, she does not really know who she is and who they have been running from. Scotty documents her life on her blog that is becoming increasingly popular and allows Scotty to vent and process events in her life.

This is a fun read! While reading it appears as if Scotty is actually writing the novel as it sounds just like a teenage girl. The blog posts and comments are fun to read as they are interspersed throughout the book. This is a great series for teenage girls as it is positive, realistic and can be related to!

Book Review - "The Canary List"

"The Canary List" written by Sigmund Brouwer weaves a story that is filled with hurt, lies, and misunderstandings, but also kindness and grief. Jaimie runs to the refuge of an elementary school teacher's home as she senses she needs to run for her life. The teacher, Crockett, is dealing with his own struggles, yet he seeks to help this girl. However, he becomes framed for being a pedophile and finds himself immersed in this darkness that Jaimie senses and is a part of her life.

Honestly, this book was not really what I thought it would be be. I found it to be confusing at times as the story went along, due to how the story flowed. The characters were well-developed and I thought they were very believable, but I found the story hard to get into at times. Jaimie is like so many children being moved around from foster home to foster home and is misunderstood. I would have liked the focus to be more on the characters and less emphasis on the Catholic Church; however I do see the need for this as well. If you enjoy supernatural books or thrillers, you will probably enjoy this book.

Receiving questions from readers, fans and people he comes into contact with, Max has taken some of these, shared them and answered them in this book creating a collections of wisdom, encouragement and Biblical truths.

The questions that Max answers are divided into 7 sections in the book: hope, hurt, help, him/her, home, haves/have-nots, and hereafter. One question is particular that Max answers is in regards to worrying about children and asking how to control these worries. Max answers with Bible verses that speak about worrying, and also addressed how worry is antitrust. It seems that in today's society, worry is a huge thing, as we all have something or many somethings to worry about and it can be easy to be consumed with worry instead of trusting and relying on God.

This is a great resource filled with questions that the readers will relate with! I highly recommend Max Lucado's latest treasure!
